Normally i get .avi format are those able to convert into mpeg2 format but i recently got some vids that are .avi format yet when i open up my "Ulead Video Studio 8" it tells me that it is a unreadable format... How many .avi formats are there? Or are there newer versions that need a newer program for converting? If so, where can i get it? Thanxs in advance~

You might want to try scanning the file with a "codec inspector" (correct term?) tool like GSpot - it will tell you what is used for audio/video (codecs/fps/sample rates/etc)..Also, you may want to look into using something else to convert your video (once you figure out your source) - ie: frameserving with VirtualDub/VdubMod/VdubMPEG2 or Avisynth into your choice of encoders.
edit - oh and without getting too complex (i'm not truly an expert by any means on the subject), but an AVI is just a container - a wrapper if you will... It could contain any video format really, ie: MPEG, XVID, DIVX and so forth. -
ok, thanxs for the info.
I got another qns regarding if i'm prompt with a error like "Audio Codec not found" which i'm not sure why? As i have d/l a newer version package of "Codecs3" (IIRC), so why is that a problem of audio codec when converting? -
The same as your video problem. You're missing some audio codec.

Thanxs for the quick reply...
May i know where to get a more perfect package for audio codecs? I got my package from freecodecs.com -
Don't use codec packs - they are bound to ruin your system. Identyfy what codecs are used for a particular file (use GSpot 2.52 beta) - download and install the one(s) required, and only those. Pretty soon you've got it all covered, without having a cluttered system.

I got the Avisynth yesterday. But i cant seems to figure out how it works...
Maybe some Avisynth users out there can give me some pointers or thread to start with.
Thanxs to mats.hogbergs for the answers. Btw can you give me a specific website of where to get the codecs from? -
If you are going to DVD from AVI, I would suggest FitCD to start with. It can help you resize correctly, and produces a simple avisynth script to get you started. I would also look at AVSEdit, an avisynth editor that works a little like a VB editor - hints on parameters etc. It also has a good avs reference built in.
I would also look at the Blockbuster plugin - great for smoothing nasty blocks in your AVI files before resizing up to DVD, and aSharp for putting a little detail back after resizing up.
Most of the main codecs you are likely to need can be found in the Codecs area of the Tools section of this site.Read my blog here.

Great... guns1inger.
But what i need is convert to mpeg2 format & burn into normal VCD format not DVD. Sorry if i haven mentioned it in the beginning.
So Avisynth seems to be using 'codes' to edit video? Or is there other types like Ulead Video Studio? Coz i'm more familiar with those simple editing & converting softwares rather than using 'codes' for editing.
Audios codecs found here... Oops, really didnt notice that. Sorry~ -
Read my blog here.

Ok... got the wrong format... as long as its mpeg i'm able to work on it.
I only need the avi to mpeg conversion will do. The rest will need my burner software (Using Nero) to encode it to VCD format.
Will just need tmpgenc to this conversion? Don't need any additional programs? Thanxs for the quick reply~!! -
I will use tpmgenc to convert as it has choices of converting. But Nero doesn't, thats why i used a Video Editting Software like Ulead.
Thanxs for info~
