    MPEG-1
    MPEG-2
    MPEG-4

From the Glossary on the top left. Also check out the "What Is" DVD and VCD.

If you want the technical specs as far as the differences in de/encoding routines check www.mpeg.org . Plenty of example code and pdfs.

My professor wants us to "learn to use user support forums" so that we can be more "self sufficient". And this is the question that he wants us to get an answer for. So, I would appreciate it if someone could share their knowledge of mpeg with me and post a quick answer telling me what the basic differences are between mpeg-1, mpeg-2 and mpeg-3. Thank you!

Start learning to be self sufficient by reading the links disturbed1 provided. Don't ask people to spell out what you can easily find for yourself.
