I have a video file with the extension mkv. I've done some reading so I know it is a matroska package. I am able to open it with virtualdubmod but the audio tag and compression are unknown. I tried using gspot and got the same thing. I was able to save the video as an avi with virtualdubmod but am unable to hear any audio. I downloaded the matroska pack and using the matroskadiag I found out that the audio was core aac. I installed coreflac decoder and media player classic. Media player classic will play the mkv file with audio fine. I still do not hear any audio if I play the avi that I saved with virtualdubmod.
How can I convert/extract a playable avi from the mkv file? Thanks in advance for any help.

FFDShow will also decode AAC, but you have to config it to do so.

As for VDubMod... I'm pretty sure the MKV support isn't quite there. You'd be better off using the MK tools to demux the audio out then try to convert it to MP3 using BeSweet or something.
