This has been covered before, but I guess I need some clarification...

Could the following be true and where false can you correct me....

    1. I have approximately 900 jpegs. They are famaily slides (converted) that need to be distrubuted to 25+ different family members - some have PCs, some have Macs, and the old people want to view them on a DVD player (jpeg compatible).

I don't want to make a "movie" of stills (ie not a DVD w FCP - I've already done that for the highlights, w sound, transitions etc. - came out great), Now, I want to send for posterity, a disc to also allow the viewer to copy individual files for printing, emailing, etc. and also watch on TV), a true slide show was prefereable but i ran into problems.

    2. If I do a slide show proper, with DVDSP, FCP, or Toast (which ever one of these offers a slide show), you get limited to 99 slides on a DVD or a CD. If there is a work around, I don't know it. For those of you versed in DVDSPro, there is a "convert slide show to clip" or something option that I just dont understand (mostly because I only have experience burning FCP files in that program).

    3. Thus, I think, one must you save them as jpeg's (data, as compared to a true slideshow) on a DVD or CD and let the individual make their own slide show by merely advancing each file or using some basic viewers that will do that for them. OK for PC and Mac, however, with my DVD player (hooked to TV) it won't recognize the Jpegs off of a DVD, so now I am left with a CD, which it can read.

    4. When I burn them all on a CD, now I have a Data CD, with 900 jpegs, works on a PC and Mac (the "slideshow" will be generated by the viewer used on the PC or Mac, or the viewer can click on every file for all I care), BUT on the DVD player I am limited to 200 files only.

    5. It has been mentioned previosiouly that you can get around THAT by putting 199 files in (in my case) five directories, and that, although it is very basic, you can (and i have) been able to naviagate all 900 files....on a DVD player, a Mac, and a PC

    Bottom Line....

Is there any easier or better way to do this?

Sorry for the length of this basic answer, hope it's not to redundant or basic.

    Thanks.

    You're not an idiot.

You're limited to 99 photos per TRACK, not DISC. :-)

You're limited to 99 TRACKS per DISC. Both VCD, SVCD and DVD.

Ok, so if I wanted to make a slideshow, I could make 10 tracks, with 99 each, and put it on a DVD, CD, or an SVD (which I really don't even know what that is yet)....

Could you spoonfeed me on making these tracks in either FCP, DVDSP, or Toast....?

I've made DVD's from photo's, and I know what a track is, but for this purpose can u describe how to make a slideshow with mutliple tracks...just the basics, I'll read the rest.

Sorry for even more basic question..ALso, do you guess it will work on a DVD player?

    Thanks

As for how it will work on a DVD Player, great, fine wonderful.
As wonderful as you make it.

Here are basics of what you need to know:
    1. Open DVDSP

    2. Create your Menu 1 ( opening) and then create your
index ( to reference the slideshow tracks)

    3. Create buttons as you like. In our case you will need
to create 10 buttons, one for each track, here on the
    index menu.

    4. Now for your photos. Each should be 720 x 480 for NTSC,
or 720 x 576 for PAL. If they are not you can set them with
a black or neutral background as to make them all
    appear uniform on screen.

    5. You click the assets tab, and import the photos into
    the Slideshow Editor
(If you use iPhoto, you can just put the pictures arranged
in order in an Album, and just drag and drop the album in
    to the slideshow editor).

    6. Once in the Slideshow Editor, arrange in the order
you want them to appear, set any music, and set
    their duration on screen.

    7. then with that done, Convert the slideshow, after
previewing it, to a track by selecting "Convert to Track."

    8. Assign the track to the corrosponding buton in the index menu.

    9. Simulate to verify it works.

    10. repeat for the remaing 9 tracks.
    Once done, simulate to verify.
    Following that, burn to disc.

I'll be happy to tell you the steps using Toast, but please tell me are you using Toast 6 or 7? The instructions are different. Toast, by the way, can be set to automatically create data files of the photos on a DVD along with the DVD slide show.
