if both files were encoded with the smae birate, half d1 always look better...is that true? This is based upon xvid files....

  2. If the bitrate is <6,000kbps then yes I would agree that there will be less macroblocking.
The reason is that at low bitrates half D1 can allocate more data per pixel.

XVID files? You'd want 1:1 anyway, not 4:3.
    Or so I would think.

    Look better on what?

Sources with enough bandwidth for full D1 will look best in D1 @ adequate bitrate.

If you desire to compress at low bitrate, then half D1 may look better if the bitrate is reduced sufficiently.

Whatever you do, the higher the source quality the better the result.

    Gray zone. Could be either.

  7. Another factor:What is the resolution of the source files? If 640x480 it could go either way,if less than that I would go half D1.
Do a test with both res. and see what looks best.

Do some test encodes and make up your own mind.

Everyone here that knows anything only knows it because they tried it themselves. The most beneficial way to learn IMHO is through experimentation, rather than being spoonfed.
    If in doubt, Google it.
