I probably already know the answer to this one -- but I will ask anyway.
Some older videos recorded in EP mode playback strangely (noticeable on either a TV or a monitor) in any of my VCRs (JVC 7600U is my primary VCR). What occurs on some tapes is that the video will suddenly start to look like the frame rate has dropped, and the video begins to look "choppy" while the audio stays insych and is heard clearly.
Does a true TBC help deal with this error? I do wonder if it has anything to do with the auto-tracking feature on my VCRs, because if I stop the tape when it starts doing it, and rewind it to an ealier point and hit play, the same part that appeared choppy will playback just fine. I am just going to try turning off the Video Calibration feature of the JVC and use the manual tracking -- for the last 5 minutes I have and so far, so good, so it might solve the problem, but if not, does this sound like an issue for a TBC?

Well it's captured with my DVD recorder (Liteon 5005) but it has something to do with the playback of the tapes -- even when the tape is played on a television set via only my VCR connected to it, it can still show the same "jitter" or as I described what looks something like when the frame rate of something drops from say 30fps to like 20fps. When played back in different VCR's all three of them can exhibit the problem at some point or another -- and there seem to be a few points where it does it predictably. This usually goes away after a few minutes, but can start again at any time. Is this an issue of syncronization or maybe due to a tape being recorded on a VCR that is was out of alignment? The tracking is just fine (no tracking lines, picture is not jumpy at all) but at times it just seems very jittery.
I tried switching to manual tracking (btw is switching to manual tracking via via the channel up/down buttons accomplish the same thing as going into the menu and turning video calibration off on the 7600U?) and it seeems to help some -- but eventually it exhibits the same problem, though it seems less likely to occur (though that may be sheer coicidence.)
What do you think? -
It's the LiteOn doing it. It has a jitter flaw, especially on 3-hour mode, especially on hacked firmwares, and especially on 5001-5005 units.
I have it on my 5001 unless I use official firmware in SP 2-hour mode. I also have my 5001 hardware modded with heatsinks and fans.
My LiteOn 5104 overheats easily after about 2-3 hours of use, and then especially on LP 3-hour mode. Not so much on SP 2-hour.
It tends to be a heat issue, as well as firmware and LP mode related. Some people never see it, some see it regularly. It's a random error.Want my help? Ask here! (not via PM!)

Does the Liteon 5045 also have this jitter problem? I'm torn between the Liteon 5045, JVC and Pioneer units. Hopefully I will make up my mind this week. I looked today, but finding these models are hard in retail stores. Circuit City, Best Buy, and Wal-Mart are either OOS or don't carry the models in-store.
Not to go OT, but lordsmurf...You have a Liteon? I thought you were a diehard JVC guy? -
Ill say with the 5005, ive left it on all night recording and woke up the next morning, felt the top of it and its been normal and cool. No heating issues whatsoever.
Is there a way to fix this jitter issue? I did a test last night, something I should have done from the beginning, i played a tape straight from VCR to TV and the jitter was gone only with slight slight tracking issues, keep the tape playing and plug it back into the dvd burner and the top of the screen is jittering and the tracking seems more off. Im using a 1102 hacked firmware. -

Then I've tested several dozen units.
The JVC is the best one, hands down, no competition.
I would like to buy another later this year, maybe the DR-M300S.
The only reason I own other equipment is because it was cheap (and won't be used for anything even remotely important), or it has special ability that is used.Want my help? Ask here! (not via PM!)

Ill also add this with the LIte On
My jitter issues are completly random to whatever tape i have in the VCR. One tape will have mad jitter while others will be fine. Ive tried different firmware and that doesnt help, different VCR's with mixed results and it is NOT a heat issue. -
My problem doesn't seem to be related to the Lite-On, but to the tapes themselves. This problem occurs even when I have a direct connection from the VCR to the TV while playing the original TAPE (not the burned disc or passthrough the Lite-On). I ran a dry cleaning tape through the VCR though and tried it again and it worked great, so I think it's just a dirty tape (which wouldn't surprise me) or exhibited problems due to a dirty tape used before it, because the picture/jitter is mostly stable now, with a few glitches here and there, but much better.
