My job wants me to convert some training tapes to DVD. It has been a while since I've done any of this but last I knew they were making machines that did this for you. Can anyone recommend a cheap machine that will convert VHS tapes to DVD?

If not, I still have my ATI captuure card in the puter, I guess I can teach myself to do this again.

well you can get those standalone dvd recorders that can do the job i heard they do quite a reasonable job and it only take as long as the movie runs for to make the dvd than do it through the computer so your best bet is to get one of those dvd recorders they are probably not cheap but they do the job and can be used like a vcr some have hard drives in them so you can have it capture them to hard drive and edit out adverts and make basic menus and then record them to disc.

There are quite a few units available that will directly covert vhs to dvd or dvd to vhs, including govideo, JVC, and more. Expect to pay around $200.00 for one of these units. These are only good if you don't expect to have to edit or change anything. Otherwise your AIW card is your next solution, and you can capture with HUFFYUV, or VIRTUALVCR, and edit with VIRTUALDUB, or there are tons of other softwares NERO, etc. that will do the task.. It can even be done with Windows Movie Maker software (free download from Microsoft).

  7. Try "VHS to DVD", not VCR...
    Also try "DVD Recorder".

Just click on "DVD Recorders" on the left and search for the features you want/need. I've got a JVC DVD recorder and it works great. The menus are minimalist. Sometimes I've extracted the MPEG2 (with audio) and reauthored in another program for more menus, bells & whistles.

I use the JVC MV1S, and I like it for when I just want an exact copy. But I have to mention that I only used the unit 8 times before I had to send it back for repair. I've only used it 3 or 4 times since I got it back, but it has been working like a charm.

I'v recieved a JVC DR-MV1 DVD Recorder w/ a VHS. I've tried 3 times to ripp a DVD-RW from a VHS tape. No matter how i format and finalize the DVD disc afterwards, I still can't play the disc on any other player then the JVC unit. Am I doing something wrong or is this just a quirk of the JVC units?? Would changing to a DVD-R blank make any difference??

I use DVD recorders just to record stuff then I rip to PC and edit & burn my own DVDs.
