  1. I just reinstalled XP and at first there was no kind of login or user screen on startup. Now when I start XP it goes the the user screen where you pick the user and it loads the settings for that user. I'm the only user on my PC so there's no need for this.

How can I change the startup options so it goes straight into Windows?

I believe it happens after you install the .Net framework. It adds a user, so windows requires you to login even though you can't actually see another user at the welcome screen. Check Users in Control Panel to be sure.
Nothing can stop me now, 'cause I don't care anymore.

  3. Viral1 is correct ,I think. Try to see if there are any more updates/patches for the .net framework and download those. I think this will fix this "error".

it can be changed from the control panel/user accounts/change the way users log on and off/tick - use the welcome screen.

Just install Powertoys for Windows XP. There is a setting within Powertoys that allows you to bypass the user login screen.

The control panel method did not work for me. Waheed's suggestion to use Powertoys for WinXP works great. I just rebooted and no user logon screen! Thanks Waheed.

Spoke too fast. The first restart after using Powertoys did bypass the user login screen. But the next restart, the user login screen is back. Anyone know how to make the bypass permanent?

I think I remember (in old versions, anyway) that Windows wouldn't ask if the user had a blank password ... give that I try maybe

    Tried?:
    1. Click Start, and then click Run.
    2. In the Open box, type control userpasswords2, and then click OK.
    3. Clear the "Users must enter a user name and password to use this computer" check box, and then click Apply.
    4. In the Automatically Log On window, type the password in the Password box, and then retype the password in the Confirm Password box.
    5. Click OK to close the Automatically Log On window, and then click OK to close the User Accounts window.

    Baldrick,

Your suggestion works permanently. Only thing I did different is I left the user passwords blank and clicked OK. I've done 3 restarts now and the user selection screen is gone.

    Thanks buddy,
