  1. I have an old Pioneer DVR-106 writer that still seems to work fine. I use only Taio Yuden 4x DVD-R disks on it. I don't use more than about 50 disks a year and I buy them in 100 packs, so I don't have to buy very often. I just checked at supermediastore.com and saw that 4x Taio Yudens are still available, but I wasn't sure if they were still being manufactured now that faster media is available.

My question is this: if the 4x media is no longer being made, will the faster media that is optimized for higher speeds work as well as the older media does for slower burners? If it doesn't I will probably go ahead and stock up on the older stuff while it's still available.

It will depend on whether or not the firmware for the drive has a write strategy for the newer, faster media. If not, it will use a generic write strategy which isn't likely to give good results. Given the fact that 16x DVD burners can be bought for as little as $45 it may be time to upgrade.
