  1. What does it mean when you burn a disc and it has multiple rings?

    Here is an example:

    poor example, but i mean when you burn a disc and there is multiple rings as i call it..it is seen as bad to some people, but i'd like to know the real reason, and if it matters or not (as in any differece to a disc without rings)

    Had one or 2 of those - a cylinder that's not been burned at all, it seems? Coaster, it's called!
    (Not that I can see anything on this pic - much more prominent!)

    It means changes in write speed as the disc is burning. With some burners (noisy ones) you can actually hear this change in burn speed.

    Nope. It's the write strategy of your burner. It shouldn't cause any issues with your burns. If I use Fuji MIJ media in my NEC I get these same rings. It's just the way the burner switches speeds as it burns. If you watch nero burn the disc you will actually see the meter increase and the estimated time to completion jump higher or drop lower as the speed of the burn changes. It's normal.

    As ROF said, these are harmless. If you MUST eliminate them, limit your burn speed to 4x!

  7. yea, some burners at least, switch speed when burning to avoid potential coasters......basically this helps if the disc is slightly warped, has dust or dirt on it, ect (mind you if its got a lot on it, you would probably end up with a bad burn anyhow) it's done to basically keep the data as close to the original as possible.........

    My Benq DW822A did that to a Verbatim DVD-RW media once. Never been able to get rid of that ring even format with Benq 1620, LG combo or Sharp & LG recorder. Coaster for a DVD-RW ?

    @pchan

    I also have an RW with those rings caused by an LG Burner. I was at a friends house transferring data from one machine to another when the rings first appeared. I had used the disc prior to this and have used it several times since. The rings will never go away but at least in my case it has never effected any functionality of the disc.
