  1. Can someone please recomend some good media I can buy either online or at a big retailer? My only requirement is the DVDs play back on my relatives home dvd players. The reason I bought the BenQ was all the DVDs I burnt only played in computer DVD players, but wouldn't play on basic Dvd players.

    Thanks!

  2. These work great for me

    http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=5222056&type=product&id=1051384654956

Just wait till they get on sale and make sure you they are made in Japan and not Taiwan

  3. I exclusively use Taiyo Yuden discs from www.rima.com. Perfect burns every time with my Benq 1620 (as DVD-ROM).

There are still no guarantees that TY's...most commonly referred to by many people here...including myself...as the best you can buy...will solve your problem.

How many players are we talking about here?
With what program did you author the DVD's?
With what program did you burn the DVD's?
    etc etc etc.
Don't be surprised if your relatives have all picked notoriously crappy DVDR playback machines....like older Sony machines as only one example.

  5. The Fuji's from bestbuy are also Taito Yuden, provided they are made in Japan.

Just wait for a sale and if they don't work, you can just take them back.

Sony DVD+R that are made in Japan are also Taiyo Yuden.

Verbatim DVD+R also work extremely well. You don't need to check the label for these - all are made in Taiwan (they are the one exception to the "Always buy made in Japan" rule). They are manufactured by MCC, which is also 1st class media.

How did you burn those DVD's? Did you use DVD+R media? The BENQ 1620 can booktype to DVD-ROM that way it can playback on older dvd players that supposedly can not playback DVD+R media. If you use DVD DECRYPTER or NERO BURN you have the option to change booktype to DVD-ROM. This feature in enabled before you burn the dvd disc. Also QSUITE 2.1 which is a BENQ TOOL can set your BENQ 1620 to booktype to DVDROM automatically everytime you use DVD+R media.

Yes the "MADE IN JAPAN" FUJI DVD+R are TAIYO YUDEN. If the spindle says, "MADE IN TAIWAN" don't buy it.

The one exception to that rule would be if you have a store near you that still has some 4x Fuji stock (a CompUSA by me does). In that case, the 4x DVD+R discs made in Taiwan are RICOHJPNR01, superb media.

I also have a Benq 1620 in my system. I have the 1620 set for booktype dvd-rom when writing to dvd+r media. I buy most of my media from meritline.com and Costco. I have never had any problems with any media I've used in the Benq 1620. I generally burn at 4x these days. The media I have used successfully includes:

TDK 8x DVD+R (internally identified as CMC) - both inkjet printable and not
TDK 8x DVD-R (internal code = TT) - not inkjet printable
    Ritek 8x DVD-R (G05) both inkjet printable & not
Benq 8x (internal id = Daxon and indicates 16x media) - inkjet hub printable.
and various dvd-rw and dvd+rw media.

All of these have burned & worked afterwards flawlessly on any computers and dvd players I've tried.

I would recommend keeping the firmware of your Benq 1620 up to date, setting booktype for DVD+R media to DVD-ROM in your firmware and trying the Benq 8x +R media described above to start with.
