  1. I must catch myself reading this forum into the wee hours of the night on a regular basis -- great information as always all around!

I was just curious -- I get the impression from this forum, and from what I've read on digitalfaq.com(http://www.digitalfaq.com/dvdguides/capture/playback.htm) that most of the SVHS units in the 9000 series are the best SVHS units JVC has made, but I was curious how the 7600U and maybe the 7800U (and what is that U stand for anyways, US?) stack up against it?

I know the most touted difference is the 4MB of memory in some (or maybe all) of the 9000 line versus only 2MB of memory in the 7600 and 7800, and I would go out on a limb and say that I suspect the build quality and durability of the 9000 series are probably a little better, but outside of that are there any other features that distinguish the 9000 series? Does the 4MB over the 2MB make a startling difference for any of the common tape problems? I can't find anything on the JVC site, except that maybe the newer ones support more integration with JVC accessories.

I own a HR-7600U and am quite pleased with it so far, but was curious if stepping up to the HR-S9800U would benefit me enough to make it worth it -- although I would guess I could probably snag a deal on a 9800U if I looked hard enough. I paid $140 for my 7600 which seemed like an excellent bargain at the time! I do mostly VHS transfers with old tapes and find the line TBC and DNR to be quite beneficial to my transfers in most cases (outside of the occasional top-of-the screen tearing that occurs mostly on some commercial tapes when I have the TBC on, and sort of a green color shift that occurs on some of my older home movies recorded in EP, although I'm trying to address that with a color corrector/proc-amp)

That reminds me of a question I should ask -- have other JVC owners experienced the color shift I speak of? I'll have to post some screenshots for comparison when I can later.

Won't see a big difference. Only on some really bad tapes, when the TBC is stressed, will the extra RAM really make a visual difference. That happens maybe once a year for me, maybe.

  3. The 7600 is basically a 9600 with a 2MB frame buffer instead of a 4MB frame buffer. It is a much better built and better performing unit than the 7800 which replaced it. Keep your 7600.

I have a 7600 and a 9600 and have never noticed a difference in playback performance. The 9600 has a Ghost Reduction Tuner, but our local cable looks better with it off.

If you're interested in another VCR...
