Keep in mind that the firmware of older drives is not designed to write high-speed media. Probably the only solution will be using 8x media as I do not think NEC will release new firmwares for it.

But you could try using firmware written for the 2510. With the links below you will be updating the firmware of your burner to the standard Mad Dog 2510 or Dell 2510 OEM firmware. This will enable +DL and book type setting for + media (Mad Dog only).

Get the new Mad Dog firmware file in here: http://mdmm.com/drivers/OpticalDrives/8XDVD9_FW_2F9.exe

Use NEC Binflash 1.23 (Win32 GUI) to upload the new firmware. Get the tool in here: http://binflash.cdfreaks.com/#download

This firmware should have write strategies dated 2005-01-27.

If Mad Dog firmware does not work for you, you could try one of the Liggy's and Dee's modified NEC firmware. For better media support download the Dell 2510 OEM Firmware 205c from here http://liggydee.cdfreaks.com/disclaimer/2510/205c_orig.zip. This firmware does not allow bit setting for + media, but its writing strategies are dated 2005-07-21

Check all other hacks in here: http://liggydee.cdfreaks.com/page/2500/

Finally you could try using one of the herrie's hacked firmware as they include additional media support that may help you (they are a bit older but they work fine). Check them in here: http://www.herrie.org/firmwares/nec2500.html

You should use Binflash to flash Dell 2510 or herrie's firmware. You should also use this tool if you want to flash back to the original Nec 2500 1.0A version.
