Hi: I have a desktop with just a VGA output.

I purchased a WinTV 350 and plan to connect the S-Video output from the card to my TV's S-Video input.

Question: If I play a DVD movie on my computer's DVDROM drive, will the video signal be sent to my TV via the 350's S-Video connection? or do I have to have a separateconnection from my computer?

    Thanks

You should be able to play DVDs through the S-video out to your TV. However, a standalone DVD player would be a lot simpler for that purpose.

I could be wrong about this but my understanding of the Hauppauge WinTV PVR 350 is that it can only output MPEG files not VOB/DVD files. It is also not made to handle digital audio formats like AC-3 but if it can do AC-3 it will only be regular 2 channel stereo (5.1 will be downmixed).

To do what you want you really need the Xcard by Sigma Designs. Here is a link to the website ---> CLICK HERE

This can output straight from a DVD Video disc (loaded in your DVD-ROM or DVD BURNER dirve) or from a ripped VIDEO_TS folder etc. and features optical audo output for AC-3 and DTS audio. Video options include composite and S-video as well as component video (480i and 480p). It also has a mini-stereo output jack so you can get regular RCA Stereo outputs jacks if you don't need the optical digital audio output (actually I think it has not an optical digital output but the other kind of digital audio output ... the one that looks like a single RCA jack).

A better option would have been the Hauppauge WinTV PVR 250 along with the Xcard. You can still use the Xcard with the 350 model but you didn't need to pay for the extra output capability (what little there is) of the 350 model.
