    Hi everybody,

I´ve opened an AVI file (150 MB) in DivX 6.0 without any problems (audio and video were ok). When I tried to open this file in VirtualDub (v. 1.6.11) the video appears to me like the screen below. As you can see it has a terrible video quality, with colored columns along it. Audio is Ok.

    VirtualDub screen (bad video image):

    File information (from VirtualDub menu):

    Video stream
    Frame size: 162x220, 25.000 fps (40000 us)
    Length:134797 frames (1:29:51:88)
    Decompressor: DivX 6.0 Codec
    Number of key frames: 1396
    Min/av/max/total key frame size: 476/4207/22741 (5737k)
    Min/av/max/total delta frame size: 0/749/17913 (97652k)
    Data rate: 157kbps (2.97% overhead)

    Audio stream
    Sampling rate: 48000hz
    Channels: 2(stereo)
    Sample precision: n/a
    Compression: Fraunhofer IIS MPEG Layer3-Codec
    Layout: 224683 chunks (0.02s preload)
    Length: 43139136 samples (1:29:52:39)
    Min/av/max/total frame size: 192/192/192 (42129k)
    Data rate: 64kbps (11.11% overhead)

Additional information about Gspot results: I downloaded "GSpot" to check the video codec, and it says I do have the correct video codec installed. When I render the file (in GSpot) it is unable to fully render it. It says:

Directshow partially succeeded to play file. The actual text of the error or warning is 0x00040242: VFW_S_PARTIAL_RENDER - Some of the streams in this movie are in an unsupported format. The following combination of filters were used:

    AVI Splitter (Audio Splitter)
    MPEG-Layer-3 Decoder (Audio Decoder)
    Default DirectSound Device (Audio Renderer)

Does anyone know how can I fix this so this avi file has a normal video quality when opened in VirtualDub?

Thanks in advance for your help!

    Paulo.

  2. Try installing Xvid and select the -- I forget the exact wording -- "decode all supported formats" option.

Can I ask why exactly you are converting your DVD of Shrek 2 to a 160 x 220 DivX 6 ?

    And then the next question:
Why are you opening it in virtualdub ? What are you trying to do ? What do you want to end up with ?
    If in doubt, Google it.

    jagabo,

Let me explain: I´m trying to open this AVI in VirtualDub because I want to add subtitles to it. Just because of it.
Sorry about my question, but "Xvid" that you suggest me to install is the codec or the player? If were the player this is not my need because I´ve already opened this AVI in DIVx player 6.0 perfectly. What I want is that VirtualDub plays this AVI as well as DivX 6.0 does.

Thank you and I´ll wait for your response.

    jimmalenko,

The movie is in this resolution because it fits in my palmtop so I can watch it.

About your second question, I heard about VirtualDub as an excellent software to add subtitles in an AVI movie. That´s what I´m trying to do. But as you can see, the image in VirtualDub is so awful, that I can´t even see the subtitles I added!!

Do you know how to solve the problem that I´m having related to the video quality (in Divx player this same video is perfect)? Or, do you suggest another software in which I can do it (add subtitles to AVI movie)?

    Thank you

Try installing the Xvid codec. Using Xvid to decode the Divx file (they're both MPEG4 codecs) may work better than whatever is decoding the file now. Note that the Divx Player has the decoder built into the program, whereas VirtualDub will use the VFW codec specified by the system.

    jagabo,

I´ve just installed Xvid_Codec, selected "decode all supported formats" option and open the AVI again in VirtualDub. In Vdub, I am still getting the video image with errors as pasted below.
Do I have to do any configuration in VirtualDub and/or Xvid to make it work? Please tell me the steps if it exists.

    Thank you.

  8. When you open the file in VirtualDub what does it now show for the Decompressor? It said "Divx 6.0 Codec" in your ealier post. If Xvid is now decoding the video it should say "XviD MPEG-4 codec".

If Xvid isn't decoding the file, verify that it is set up to do so: Start -> All Programs -> Xvid -> Configure Decoder. Under FourCC support DX50 should be checked.

Try using AVICodec or GSpot to determine what codec (FourCC) is used.

The last thing I know of that you can try: make a second copy of your AVI file. Use a FourCC code changer to change the fourCC code to XVID.

    jagabo,

When I opens VirtualDub, it still shows for the Decompressor "Divx 6.0 Codec". As Xvid wasn´t decoding the file, I tried what you said: "Start -> All Programs -> Xvid -> Configure Decoder. Check DX50 under FourCC support". But it doesn´t work (I have the same image as posted before). What can be wrong? Why Xvid isn´t decoding the file?

About the last thing you suggested, I´ve downloaded and installed "AVI_FourCC_Code_Changer" but I don´t know how to use it. Below the screen that I have.
What should I choose in the first and second fields? (P.S.: According to Gspot the codec-FourCC-used in my file is: "DX50/DIV4"

    Thank you.

  10. Click on the little folder icon to select the AVI file. You will probably see "divx" and "DX50" in the two fields. Change them to "xvid" and "XVID". Then press apply.

If you don't see divx/DX50, what do you see?

    jagabo,

When I selected the AVI file, I saw "divx" and "DX50" in the two fields. But when I tried to change to "xvid" and "XVID" I didn´t find them in the list. The options that I found in the first field are: "mp41", "mp42", "mp43" and "DIV4". In the second field the options are: "MP41", "MP42", "MP43" and "DIV3".

P.S.: In Xvid configuration, "DIVX", "DX50" and "mp4v" (FourCC support) are checked.

So, why can I see "xvid" and "XVID" in these fields??

    Thank you...

  12. Just type them (xvid/XVID) into the fields.

    jagabo,

Now, it works perfectly!!! Thank you very much man!!

A last question: I see two images, side by side (see the screen below). Is it possible to see just one (I don´t know if it will make any difference when I add subtitles and transfer the AVI to my palm...)

  14. VirtualDub isn't meant as a media player. It is for editing, processing, and transcoding video. It shows both the original picture and the results of any filtering. This is very helpful when your fixing a video with bad colors, exposure, etc. I don't know of any way to force the program to only show one pane. You can force it to update only one pane with Options -> Display Input/Output Video. Or you can resize the window so that only one is visible.
