  1. ASUS 8200 Deluxe (GE-Force Ti 500) White saturation washout when capturing

I tried the below solution before with the corresponding drivers about a year ago and had everything working properly…well after a few formats and update OS and drivers now I can’t get the trick to work again even with the recommended drivers from below.

Anyone has a solution as to how I can fix this heavy white saturation problem with new drivers and such. I read a post on VCDHelp.com where some guy said he used transistors to reduce the signal sensitivity of the S-VID jack. Here is a cut and paste from about a year ago when I posted my problem when I first bought the card

Video Cap Problem ASUS 8200 T5 Deluxe *White Saturation*

I am a very unhappy with my ASUS 8200 T5’s video capture quality. The video looks great except for scenes with any white color displayed. White scenes looking horribly saturated, washed out and are lacking detail. I have tried the retail drivers, updated ASUS drivers and of course the Nvidia reference drivers all with the same results. I can’t believe the fact that I spent over $400 for this card and the quality of video captures look so horrible. I am not the only one with problems; I have posted the same question on different boards and found many others are also experiencing the same problems with HEAVILY over saturated white scenes. I have owned this card for 6 months now and have yet to capture a single clip worth saving. To me the card is absolutely useless as a capture device… PLEASE if anyone has a fix for this problem I would greatly appreciate a response.

    My system:
    OS WinXP
    ASUS P4T-E Mobo 106 bios
    ASUS 8200 T5 Deluxe
    Kingston 512 RDRAM 800MHz
    P4 1.9 MHz
Hercules Game Theater XP sound card
O.S. Hard drive WD 40-gig O.S. Controller card Promise Ultra 100tx
Capture drive(s) 2 WD 100-gig RAID RAID Promise Fast track ultra 100tx

    (rev 1.2)
This procedure resolves the brightness/excessive white saturation problem when capturing NTSC or PAL video with the Asus 8200 Deluxe series (with the Philips 7108e chip) under Windows 98SE, 2000, and XP running nVidia's Detonator 23.11 or higher (including Technogarb's) and WDM 1.08 reference drivers.
    ---
    1. Completely remove all old video & capture drivers.
    2. Install nVidia Detonator 23.11 or higher, rebooting as necessary.
    3. Install nVidia WDM 1.08, rebooting as necessary.
    4. Install capture software (or just use Windows Movie Maker in XP) to test to make sure everything is working so far. I still get a black capture window sometimes but if I reboot it seems to initialize properly and then capture will keep working until I reboot again.
    5. Install Video Live WDM from http://www.ab.ru/~lookin/downloads/_downloads22.htm
    6. Reboot.
    7. Install Video Live Mode from the same URL.
    8. Regedit and add or change the DWORD value HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\VLio\EVIPInit = 0x0
    9. Create a shortcut in Startup to point to the livemode.exe installed from step #7 with a target of "C:\Program Files\VLive\LiveMode\LiveMode.exe" reg 3 0x00
(make sure to leave the quotes as above if you are doing a shortcut. Or just make a batch file to run it in whatever drive & directory you installed to with the command: livemode reg 3 0x00 )
    10. Reboot and capture with your favorite software with no brightness problem on latest drivers!

Note that you are still going to use the Nvidia Universal WDM for capturing. There is no need to install any more Video Live software other than described above.

If you still have the brightness problem you are not running the livemode reg 3 0x00 command properly. You can run it any time after bootup, even while a capture program is running if you want to watch it change the picture.

If you want to play around with the manual gain control and many other settings also download the SAA7111A EVIP manager from the Video Live URL. It will run without messing up the picture as long as you did step #8.

Also, remember if you are just getting a black capture window to reboot. I seem to get it every other time I reboot but then rebooting again will fix it.

Thanks to drracer and to Igor for the Video Live components. No thanks to Asus for their poor quality drivers.

This method works for me, although I didn't create a shortcut in StartUp; I launch the command "C:\Program Files\VLive\LiveMode\LiveMode.exe" reg 3 0x00 when I need it (and before running my capture program)

    Hope this will help.

  3. Hi Coda304,

The trick with the SW works for me too, even after installing some of the latest drivers. I keep the hardware solution with the resistors as backup.

I made a small drawing for the HW solution:

I just cut a RCA cable in half an added the resistors.

  4. My problem is the software solution is NOT working! Can you tell me what operating system you are running and do you have any service packs installed?

Your pic didn't make on the forum, can you post it again. What type of resistors are you using?

  5. I have still the Win Xp Pro 2002 edition with no service packs yet. I have dowloaded the latest Asus driver 29.40, and I use the Nvidia 1.1.9.0 capture driver from 9-9-2002.

    The drawing again (I hope):

    Hope this helps

  6. Somehow the drawing can not be uploaded

I Use 2 resistors of 100 Ohm, one in the signal and one from signal to ground.

  7. Thanks for helping hope bro...this problem is getting the best of me I think I have the software solution problem narrowed down to not using the correct version of Video Live WDM & Live Mode, I have tried it with the detonator 23.11 and the 1.08 on my machine with a clean install of XP and no service packs.

So how does the video quality look with the resistor trick, is there any loss of detail and is the white saturation problem completely fixed or just partially fixed.

I would be incredibly grateful if you could upload the version of Video Live WDM & Live Mode you are getting successful results with and the drawing of the resistor too. Pleeeeease up them to my email the files are very small!!!
    Thanks so much

  8. Finally got the software working with latest NVIDIA referance drivers/WDM & WIn2K SP3!

    Thanks much for the help!

  9. You're welcome

Maybe you can give me some help or a hint. I'm looking for a capturing program that split the captured video file into smaller parts (during capturing) every time the video stream changes dramatically (so when a new scene starts). Do you know such a program that works with our card? This could ease the job....

I was using the vlio.sys driver to correct my Gainward geforce3 board's washed-out captures also, and am having a HELL of a time repeating the successful installation of the brightness fix since replacing my motherboard (damn those leaky capacitors!). After a fresh install of Win98SE, I have tried all sorts of installation combos. Having thought about it, though, I believe that I originally used the video live mode setup before upgrading to SE, so I think I'll experiment with installing the video fix and THEN upgrading the OS. Once I'm done goofin' around, I'll post the results. Did you upgrade to SP2 before or after you started using the brightness (actually, it's an incorrect initialization of the gain setting) fix? If I still cannot get around the problem, I'll try to contact Igor Lookin, the author of the software. I really must get this setup back in working order, because the evip manager unleashes the tremendous potential of the saa7108 (there are versions of the evip manager for other Philips chips, also) to create high-quality captures. Without it, my card's captures are unusable...
