My Pioneer DVR-107 crapped out on me last week and I replaced it with a Pioneer DVR-110D. Now when burning my Prodisc 8x DVD-R hub printable media, I notice that it is supported up to 12x on my burner.
Would the Taiyo Yuden 8X DVD-R hub printable media also do that? I noticed there is a good sale on the 100 pack ($39.99 shipped) from Supermediastore.com, and the price is not that much higher than the Prodisc ($32.99 shipped). I know that TY is much better media but I'll probably stick with Prodisc if TY won't also burn at 12x.
Thoughts?

Taiyo Yuden is heads and tails above prodisc. But it will cost more. If you want longer storage life for your media, then absolutely switch to the TY. But if you are only making copies of your personal videos, and can remake them at any time, then prodisc will be just fine.

I agree with the longevity and quality facts that harley2ride mentioned. However, in an attempt to help you with your burn speed question, I offer the following. I have a DVR-108 and 2 DVR-109's all with the latest release firmware. The 109's only burn discs at their rated speed only where the 108 will ussually give you a little more. An 8X disc will go at speeds up to and including 12.4X (according to DVD Decrypter). I burn a variety of discs from Prodisc, Ridata, Verbatim, and Ty's. All of the hub printable variety. I never get anything better than the 8X as rated on my 109's.
Sorry I can't give you any specifics on the 110. I won't be getting mine until the big man comes in a few nights.
I hope this helps you out a little! All's well that burns well. -
I can burn YUDEN 8x DVD+R at 12x on the Pioneer 109. It's a good thing that the Pioneer tries to limit a disc to what works best for a media. Letting you overburn speed is bad.

Generally speaking, you will get a higher possibilty of burn and then read erros if you burn at higher than the media's rated speed. Just because the burner allows you 12x with some 8x media doesn't mean you should go ahead and burn at such speeds. Besides, at least with my euqipment, you don't get 12x accross the board anyway. It starts about 4x, goes to 8 and the final 1/3 is burned at 12 or so X. Rather than take a chance with an important job, I would stick to rated speeds or lower. Most people don't drive at 120MPH just because their car is able.
I have used both TY and Prodisc and find that TY is clearly superior, disc after disc. The possibility of a disc error or a disc failing doesn't even cross my mind. I can burn right up to the last megabyte without worry. I cannot say the same for Prodisc. No DVD can withstand the power of DVDShrink along with AnyDVD! -
Thanks Lord Smurf for reminding me. I should have specified I only burn -R media. I agree that overburning is risky at best

I think overspeeding simply has to do with the drive and the burner. YUDEN000T02 burns just as good at 12x as 8x on my Plextor PX-712A, Pioneer A09 and LG 4163B for example. MCC003 often does as well depending on the batch. Discs from the same spindles don't do so well on my PX-716A however.

Thanks for all the feedback! I think I'll go for the TY since I've always loved their CD-Rs and the price is only $7 per 100 more than the Prodisc 8)
