Hi I am trying to rip a sony dvd-r 30 min 1.4 Gb that was recorded with a sony dvd camcorder and OSEx quits as soon as i push begin but backups normal dvds, DVD Backup errors saying "error in processing file VTS_01_1.VOB". Mactheripper does nothing i push GO! and it quickly flashes to cancel and then right back to go like i didnt even push it. If i change the setting to main feature only it just quits. I dont know what to do all i want to do is copy the dvd to my computer so they can give the disc back to the owner it is a dvd of my step father hooking a blue marlin and they really want a copy!!! I also have toast 6 and 7. I tried to copy with 7 and i came home after work and had to force quit it because it still read "Copying". Any help would be great. I love my mac but what is going on??

In Toast 7 choose the Video window. Then click the Media button. Then choose DVD. The MPEG video on your Sony's DVD should appear in the lower window. Drag the video from that lower window to the Toast video window. This extracts the MPEG from the DVD and writes it to the Roxio Converted Items folder. One warning, the converted items folder is emptied automatically when you quit Toast unless you change the setting in Toast preferences.

Well I tried what you said and i got this error after about a minute or so "Coulnd't complete the last command because there was an I/O error (your disc may be copy-protected) Result Code = -36" I dont know what this means.

Why do you need to rip it? If it's a MPEG, you should just be
able to copy it from the DVD to your HD.
Of course it'd have to mount on the desktop. Knowing Sony,
I suspect it's a UDF disc, which OSX doesn't play nice with.
However, Unix knows all about such things. I have a script
that'll mount a UDF disc on the OSX desktop. If you'd like,
I'll e-mail you a copy. -

I bet you are running into two different bugs. First, for some reason a lot of Sony recorders violate the DVD standard and create VOB files that are 1 GB or larger. Discs with these files will probably make certain players choke.
Second, there is a bug in Mac OS X (been there since 10.0 as far as I know) that makes it so that any files 1GB or larger on a DVD disc appear to be completely filled with zeros. This is even at the lowest level, using the command line. I think the bug is in the Darwin UDF file system or something. Apple knows about it but is taking their time about fixing it.
If you have the Finder View options set to "Show Item Info" you will discover you can't even eject such a disc if you attempt to look at what files are on it. Mac OS X chugs away forever on the 1GB files trying to find valid data in all those zeros.
The only solution I have found is to copy the 1GB file off the DVD using a Windows or Linux system and then move that file back to your Mac via an external drive or a network. Once the file is off the UDF volume, then everything works fine. -
Well first off i plan on getting a dvd burner for xmas. I would like to return the dvd to its original owner and would like a copy for my parents. IT is UDF and it is .VOB and its larger than 1 GB like 1.06 GB. I'll take that script if you would like to send it and my toast version is 7.0 so it is not 0.1 and wont be 0.1. No I have not finalized the DVD i do not know how to do so, I recieved the disc as is and it plays in the dvd player just fine. As far as imagemixer, i got a copy with our sony digital 8mm and it errors saying added files contain format not supported in this application. I have not downloaded the dvd2 version yet though. I cant get that stream anyvideo into mac thru usb. I am thinking about getting a firewire cable to connect and am hoping that will allow me to capture video? Does anyone think this is possible? Thanks

To "finalize" a disc you need the Sony camera. One of
the options is "finalize." If it hasn't been finalized, no Mac
will acknowledge its existence, tho some peecees will.
If you PM me your e-mail address, I'll send you that UDF
Mounter script. I can't attach it to this note, since I don't
have a URL.
