I was having problems with my DVD burns being slow until I looked on the forums and found that a fix was to uninstall the secondary IDE channel and then reinstall after rebooting.
However, after burning 1 dvd at 4x with no problems, my second dvd burned at 1.2x with problems again. I looked at the device driver and my dvd burner changed back to PIO mode.
What's going on and what can I do to fix this so I don't have to keep uninstalling and reinstalling my IDE controllers?
May I add, I'm running a Micro Advantage 8DVD-B13 and WinXP... if that helps. I updated firmware for the dvd burner and checked the settings in my BIOS... I have an Award Bios and the settings say DVD: PIO mode: 4 and DMA(ultra): 2. Does this matter?

Make sure you have an 80 wire cable between your motherboard and DVD drive.
Sometimes different devices don't get along on the same cable (rare).
If you have only one device on the cable make sure it's at the end of the cable, not on the middle connector. Electrical reflections off a dangling end can cause problems. -
I used the wire that came with the dvd burner, I'm sure its an 80. I've had the case open before making sure it's plugged in correctly and ect...

I did not use the cable that was given to me, sorry. I have a Lite-On cd burner on the same cable as my Micro Advantage DVD burner. My Lite-On hasn't had a problem so far with this set up. I've had it set up like this for about a year and a half.

It's not always a simple fix. This link gives some good info on the causes and cures:

The registry fix works for some. But when you decide to edit the registry, save a copy of it first just in case...
