  1. Toshiba is not able to release its HD DVD players at present because the relevant copy-protection management system, or advanced access content system (AACS), has yet to be finalized by the DVD Forum, a global organization that sets and promotes DVD standards

Toshiba said Tuesday it has abandoned its initial plan to launch High-Definition DVD players in Japan by the end of this year, due to a delay in implementing copy-protection measures.
Toshiba is not able to release its HD DVD players at present because the relevant copy-protection management system, or advanced access content system (AACS), has yet to be finalized by the DVD Forum, a global organization that sets and promotes DVD standards.

The DVD Forum, which has adopted HD DVD as the next-generation optical disc format, regards AACS as an integral part of the HD DVD format.
Therefore, Toshiba cannot launch its products without the organization's finalization of rules for managing the content protection system, Toshiba said.
Soon after the implementation of AACS into hardware and software products, Toshiba plans to launch HD DVD players and notebook computers with HD DVD drives, the company said.

Toshiba said it has maintained its launch plan in the United States for the first quarter of 2006.

The HD DVD format, championed by Toshiba, is competing with the Blu-Ray Disc, promoted by Sony and others, for the status of industry standard.

Nothing is 100% secure. Sooner or later, copy protection will be cracked.

AACS will use mostly hardware protection. There is discussions of mod chipping but for the general public few really like to use solder.

well of course nothing is 100% secure..

but i'm just wondering how long it will be before these devices are cracked.. for the longest time no one was able to touch the gamecube.. i'm not sure how they've progressed with it as of now, but the last i heard they were using regular dvd-r's with modded cases.

they've really put a lot of work in to copy protecting the xbox 360, ps3, hd-dvd & blu-ray..

i wonder why dvd-audio hasnt been cracked yet?

Because there isn't enough interest in DVD Audio for it to be worthwile. Why spend time cracking something that nobody uses?

Just my 2 cents, I'll go get a drink and wait for ROF to have a $hit-fit over point #3.

Actually, DVD AUDIO has been cracked. Its got something to do with using WinDVD and outputing the high solution streams into WAV. Cant exactly remember, but there was a thread on this topic about it a while back.
