If you are asking about backing up a DVD, DVDShrink is one of the best. If it cannot decrypt the DVD, DVDFab Decrypter is popular to be used along with Shrink.

If you are creating DVDs, then it can get complicated. There are a lot of programs out there. I use TMPGEnc encoder and TMPGEnc DVD Author to create the DVD format.

If you are working with AVI formats, VirtualDub or my favorite, VirtualDub Mod. Many filters available. Can frameserve to encoders like TMPGEnc.

FairUse Wizard can be used to convert unencrypted DVDs to Xvid or Divx. AutoGK and AVI.net are also popular.

Super is a video converter that can handle many formats.

ConvertXToDVD or the freeware version DivxToDVD are good for AVI to DVD conversions.

Nero is great for burning, doesn't do encoding or authoring very well, IMO.

The list is long. If you hang around this site for a while, you should get a pretty good idea what you need, but it varies with what you want to do. (And what you can afford. Some programs can get expensive.)

If you don't know how to use these programs.....That's what this site is for. Just ask. (And please read. We have a lot of guides available.
