I've spent the past week searching the forums and trying to piece info together, but additional advice would be appreciated.
I am looking for a good Multi-region player with very good PAL-->NTSC conversion. Also, it needs to be set to permanently code-free via a hack that you can do with your remote control.
I don't want a player that has to be re-set periodically or has a code-lock when you switch a certain number of times). Disabling Macrovision would be good, but not essential. This is for a basic TV with S-video, but upgradable would be good.
I have a CyberHome but it conked out after a few months...so I want something quality but not horribly expensive.
Any help is much appreciated! Thanks!

Samsung HD841 (and, I assume, other HD models)
Cambridge Audio Azur 540D
Both do interlaced and progressive scan PAL-to-NTSC conversion. Cambridge Audio does it out of the box (no hacks needed), and Samsung can easily be turned into multi-region unit via firmware update.
There are also some Yamaha DVD players that do the same thing, but I haven't had a chance to try them myself.
