i have been renting dvds through an online rental service and now they are offering downloads of the movies instead of posting them. i downloaded a free sample which had a 7 day viewing time on it. is there any way to remove this protection and convert the file to dvd

    cheers

Unless you are buying the movie, or they allow conversion (which I doubt, hence the protection), you can't do it. It would be the same as renting a DVD and copying it.

Sure there probably is a way.
But you won't find anyone here to answer.
    Google up your question.
Some one somewhere probably knows how.

Although we do instruct people on how to make backup copies of dvd's they own, this is not the same as renting a movie and copying it, which is clearly an illegal practice which is not supported here. It is one of the "don'ts" that are listed when you make a post here:

    "Do NOT advocate warez.

Warez includes downloaded copyrighted movies, movies that are not yet released on VHS/DVD and copying rented movies"

doh! 2 people posted while i was writing this gem

  5. I do not completely agree with this being shunned upon. It may be warez, but what if he wants to watch it on his TV instead of his PC? He could burn it to an RW, watch it, record the next one over it. But, yes I am aware of the implications involved, it's just too bad. That's why I would never try the download route. What site is offering this service anyway?

it was just to watch on the tv rather than have 4 people crowd round a 17" monitor

site was lovefilm.com in the uk

  7. Maybe a TV OUT card would do you good.

if it's warez it's warez...therefore against forum rules. If you give him suggestions on how to copy the rented materials then you are advocating warez. It's all there in black and white..or in this case, green and red.

I disagree. If you addressing a technical issue it isn't a warez discussion.
If you are offering sites or client links, even then they may technically be warez.
What if he wanted to copy a PPV event for personal use? He paid for it. He isn't going to distribute it. Just timeshift for later viewing.
Right now it is absolutely impossible to have a technical discussion without impacting warez in some way.
The whole warez rule needs a better definition. If you use a ROF standard then every copy of material you buy is warez. If you use a looser standard using just copies of non-purchased materials you donwload it makes more sense. Or copies of rentals.
But if you pay for something is it warez?

Making copies of rented material is warez. You may call it "time shifting" or anything you like, it's still warez under this sites definition.
