i have found a dvd player in australia for $159AUS that plays avi files
it dose not state it on the box but if you create a cd that has 1 raw mpeg file and any avi file it recognises the avi file as VCD format and plays all of the avi codecs i've tried but some of them a little choppy but. i think if i replaced the chip that the video+audio temporally streamed to (buffer) it will alow more data to be procced and in theiry allow conatant streaming.
the dvd player that this is avalible to is the SuperDigital Dvd player that SuperCheapAuto sells in australia it also plays raw Mpeg files
the model no. is SD-108P happy hunting

  2. Seems rather unlikely (read: impossible) that it will play any AVI files (or any at all).

    Anyone with some verification?

it play's on mine not very well the qulaity varys depending on compression and diffrent CoDecs. but it dose work with all the tests I've done and all the dvd's i've ripped work but skip afew frames and jolts a bit every 2-5 seconds but i think it will work properly when i try to do what i have stated above

  4. How did you actually create your disc?

just using nero data disc close session or nero cdrw close session and as above (small mpeg file in the root, as well as avi files) it works by tricking the player into thinking it is a mpeg file (the avi) and playes the file <i think that is how it works>

i don't know how i don't know if it has all of the CoDecs but i've tried 3 diffrent versions of DivX. if you live in australia go to http://www.supercheapauto.com/stores.html and try to find the store closest to you that sells the dvd player. i plan to try more CoDecs but havent got around to it

  8. Did you get the model right? Can we get more infos? Even on google it finds nothing. I mean, if there was a miracle player out there, I think there would be more informations on it available on the web, and lots of people would have been talking about it for a while... Right now, I'm almost wondering if you didn't have a mpeg file with a .avi extension. (mine does play mpeg files like that from a data CD...) Also, "tricking" a player into thinking it's mpeg cannot possibly work, avi and mpeg1/2 are way too different. Sure, it's both A/V, but that's about the only similarity.

Do you mean if I just burn an MPEG 1/2 to the root of the DVD and stick it in the APEX 5131 it will start playing?

i don't know about your player but test it i just put an mpeg1 file (white book standards, for the small size) and the avi files in the root directory it comes up with a selection like if you were to play a mp3 file and you just click on the avi file. the names don't matter, the size dosnt matter, just 3 things:
mpeg file + avi file in root directory
close session or disc. it plays the same on a session closed cdr/w
to play much better change the chip that the dvd player buffers to

  18. I don't believe this for s second. loks like this guy has a vested interest in getting these units sold. Either stockholder or has interest in the store.

First saying the mpeg file tricks into thinking its a vcd, (When burned as an iso disk) then saying the mp3 style menu comes up and you choose it in there,

    /me doesn't buy it.

  19. I wouldn't have believed it either but I've talked to him and he's given quite specific details on what he's done and the model number of the player... I'm willing to wait for independent confirmation... However, the player may only be available in Australia as it appears to be a local rebadged machine. I'd love to know who actually makes it...

i don't particually care if you belive me or not i know is the truth. if you don't belive me don't go out and buy a unit, if you live in australia make the cd to the format described above and go test it out at a super cheap auto. it plays on my machine and my sister just purchest 1 so when i go down to victoria i will test it on hers. and if i wanted to sell these machines would'nt i say that they play perfictly?
and if i was a retailer/creator of this dvd player i would have placed the chip into the machines myself and sold them alot dearer than $159!!

Found a SuperCheapAuto advertisement and attached a pic in case anyone else recognises it.

The remote is the same as my mates' Singer SGD-001.
Also, the model number of this machine (SD-108P) is consistent with other Singer DVD Players.
I understand Singer, Sansui and Akai originate from the same factory.

well if eny one has a Singer, Sansui or Akai dvd player can they please check if it works for there players?
i tried another type divX file and was plesently supprized it played perfictly!! (meaning: it was not jerky and looked and sounded as good as the original source{vhs tape} but i could easily fit 2hr30min on a cd) i plan to post the exact format the divX file was made
    Good luck
P.S. thank you for posting the picture it now makes less people think i was crazy and it did not exist!!

  23. If you want to check out another player that does this (or will soon), go to the DiVX homepage. They have an announcement about a forthcoming DVD player that will play DiVX .avis. They call it the "first", but having lived in asia for a long time, I wouldn't doubt that some dubious company has made a player that does just that solely for the asian market with little hype (to avoid expensive legal issues which would no-doubt arise).

    Here's the blurb:
First DivX Compatible DVD Player to be Released 2002-10-22 18:33 GMT

The announcement we've all been waiting for--the upcoming DP-450 from KiSS Technology will be the first DVD player to support DivX playback, offering compatibility with certain versions of DivX video. Look for more exciting DivX CE news soon.

  24. The kiss player is not new news and has been discussed several times on this forum. The problem is it will only play divx which are encoded to certain perameters, so you will find it probrably will not play a large percentage of divx files without reencoding them first.

what are the spec on the divX format that the KiSS player plays because it could very well be a sister company that has made this (or a rival) and as i stated above it plays choppy so if it was compressedto the correct standards or possibly a new book (white book etc.) imay be able to play the video better or smoothly!!!

yea thats what i think also -- its prob the same as or made by the same company as the KISS player .. but figuring out sometimes which company produces what and in which factory is sometimes next to impossable .

  27. I play avi's on my dreamcast using DCDivx, works perfectly fine
just drop the avi's onto the disk, then load it up and select the file to play
no more hours of converting to mpeg to play as S/VCD.

  28. Digging out old posts eh?

Well, there are players for gaming consoles, but to say they're the best... You can also use a HTPC, and most likely you can build one from used parts for next to nothing, and it does a lot more than just a gaming console. Anyways, can't see myself buying a game console (dreamcast, xbox or whatever) to use whatever software to play divx...

  29. That isn't digging out old posts (month rofl), THIS is!

    Can any players play xvid?
