I have two SFF computers on my desk for video and web editing. My main machine has the Pioneer 109 with the latest firmware (1.58) from Pioneer in it as does the 108 burner.

However, when I put the very same media in each machine, the 108 reports it can burn it much faster than the 109 which I'm supposing is the newer better burner? But seems like it's pickier in deciding if it will actually allow you to burn faster or not?

I produce my own videos and always burn them at the slowest allowable speed.

But why the discrepency in highest burn speeds? This happens with what ever media I toss at it.

  2. the pioneer 109 was shit.depending on the firmware it was either ok,or a total turd
the pioneer 108 on the other hand was a lot less bothersome to use.
methinks that pioneer fubared the 109 firmware.

I have had pioneer drives starting with the 104 through 110 and all the odd number drives suck in some way. The even numbered ones work great.

  10. The Pioneer DVR-108 has firmware support to overspeed more media than the 109. That was/has been a common compliant with the 109 when compared to the 108 since it was released. I, personally, don't care because I don't overspeed media. I care more of the quality of the write.

I have both a Pioneer DVR-106 and DVR-108 and both are excellent drives. Neither are being updated for newer media compatibility even to write at their slower speeds, so eventually I'll upgrade. I don't plan on buying another drive until we reach the speed limits of each format. 16X on single layer and 8X on dual layer and re-writeables. By then I'll probably have a hard time finding media supported by the DVR-108.

Ahh ok that makes sense.. I found some media that works on more players than those shyte Maxells +R that failed on more players than I can shake a stick at. But now have to find some media that will work on everyone's player AND be printable through my R300 printer so I can get away from sticker labels.

However, I'm prolly looking at changing burners all together anyway, prolly a newer Plextor.

I just find it a shame that you simply can't just pick up any media and know it will work 100% of the time in 100% of the players out there, it's always one thing or another causing a compatibility problem with something... sigh.

    Cheers M8

We're in agreement on the latter point, although I have noticed some media that used to burn at 8x on my 108 now needing a 4x burn for reliable results. Possibly not a good sign re the current health of the drive.

I'm more concerned about the availability of good hacked f/w for the later Pioneer models, now that Flash's site has quit the game. I do like the region free and other enhancements he had. His 108 f/w has worked quite well for me. Now it's down to the Dangerous Bros., I guess.

  13. Has anyone found any compatible/reliable -R DL printable media yet for the new DVR-110D burner?

I've tried Ridata 4x as Ritek have been very faithful with all of my single layer burns and haven't really had any reason before now to switch brands. The Ridata's unfortunately went over like a lead ballon and now I'm stuck with a $58 spindle of wasted discs, grrrr

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

    Thanks.

you might want to try discs made by ProDisc. I tried the riteks and ridata (for all intended purposes are the same) Don't feel bad, I have 150 discs of Maxells +R which, though they burn and play well with all my burners and players, aren't proving ro be 100% comptible with my clients machines.. but the ProDisc ones work fine.

I'm still using the latest Piodata 1.18 firmware on the DVR-108 for it's SL bitsetting. I'm thinking about picking up a DVR-110 when a firmware is released that suppports bitsetting and DVD-RAM. Right now the Buffalo SL bitsetting firmware everyone is using from TDB doesn't support DVD-RAM.
