Someone is offering inexpensive DVD-Rs that are 2x speed. I presume this just means they are tested to 2x speed but might work at 4x or 8x. I also presume that even 2x would work fine when used to record TV programmes. Am I right?

If you use 'inexpensive' media, you may just be buying coasters.
Is it really worth the risk?
You would have to find out the media code to see what they really are. If you look to the left under 'DVD Media' most of the more common brands are listed, along with the media codes.
If they could be burned at a higher than rated speed, you likely would have to use modified firmware on your burner.
