I'm doing a "build to order" thing on a computer store online. It's $36 less if I don't include the SATA LG dvd burner that comes with it. Can I just use my regular IDE Samsung burner that I've been using? Or do I need to have SATA DVD burner too? The MOBO is ASUS P5QL-E
    Thanks

Makes no difference using sata as compared to ide for burners.

It does make a difference depending on the mobo sata controller chipset in order for the SATA Dvd burner to work correctly.

To OP: If you order the SATA LG dvd burner make sure you have RAID disabled in your mobo bios and set SATA to IDE. That Asus P5QL-E mobo uses ICH10R chipset which is fine as long as RAID is disabled in mobo bios and SATA is set to IDE.

Well, it's both IDE and SATA capable so what I want to do is install both my current hard drive and dvd burner into that new system so I can transfer all the data to the new SATA hard drive that comes with it. That should work right?

The ide burner will be just as good to use as a sata burner so there is no need to buy the sata burner and you can transfer the data over as well from sata to ide hdd.If you want to tranfer the os as well you have to use an image/hdd transfer program.

I would not get the burner simply because it's an LG, not a really good choice these days. Your Samsung is better.

It maybe better to buy that LG SATA Dvd burner because that ASUS mobo only has 1 IDE channel. It's not wise to run a PATA hd and a PATA dvd burner on that one IDE connection. You could always buy a PIONEER or SAMSUNG SATA dvd burner later. You should be fine transferring all the data from your PATA HD to your new SATA HD. Dvd burners are cheap these days. Just my 2 cents!
