  1. Hi,

A guy at my work gave me two motherboards the other day. An Asus and a MSI. There was only one chip. I put it all together and nothing happened other than the fans turning on. After investigating a little bit I found the CPU pins were bent and one pin was broke off completely. I have an Asus motherboard (P4S533 model) It was the latest greatest when the intel northwood came out a few years ago. I need to get a new CPU. But when I go to newegg they don't sell northwoods anymore. Only the P4 prescott.

Both northwood & Prescott are socket 478 but...
Are northwood mobo's compatible with Prescott CPU's??????

If not I'll just buy a new mobo and CPU just trying to save $50 on a new mobo that's all.

It's going to be a kids computer so it's not going to be anything fancy.

    Thanks

I have a ASUS P4P800SE mobo that can use either a NORTHWOOD or PRESCOTT processor. The cost is about $90-95.00

    From this site, http://www.hardcoreware.net/reviews/review-208-1.htm,

So far, every P4 motherboard we've seen in the past two months has been Prescott-compatible. Even boards made before the Prescott was announced can be made compatible with a BIOS update. MOST boards based on the 865PE or 875P chipset should be okay. However, one thing we are seeing is that when you plug in a Prescott, the MOSFETs are stressed a lot higher than with a Northwood, and therefore get a lot hotter. I would recommend picking up some small heatsinks and install them on your MOSFETs if you are upgrading to Prescott. We'll start seeing boards come out with heatsinks pre-applied to their MOSFETs.
