I have had several problems trying to get my tivo files to dvd compliant dvds. I tried Sonic MyDVD(crap), encounters errors when changing buttom image, takes 1&1/2hrs to edit 1hr video(slow and freezes). I then tried the directshow/TMPGEnc editing process. Which worked wonderfully for editing the video, took about (EDITED 7mins) compared to 90mins. The problem I am having now is that the output from TMPGEnc isn't a dvd compliant video. It won't play correctly in my toshiba. Video is uncentered. So my thinking now is, that I want to try and use a program other than my horrible Sonic Mydvd to re-encode the TMPGEnc output files to make them dvd-compliant.
Is there a FREE program that will allow me to re-encode to dvd compliant. Free because I already Spent too much $$ on the so called MyDVD tivo edition. Which actually doesn't work on the tivo files 10% of the time....

What We Do In Life, Echoes In Eternity....

Here is my Process
1. Download from tivo
2. Convert with Dirctshow Dump(to unlock mpeg from tivoDRM)
3. DVDpatcher to change 1st header only horizontal to 720(so video will work in TMPGEnc)
4. Author with TMPGEnc
5. DVDpatcher to change 1st VOB horizontal back to 480
6. Burn with copytodvd.
After this process, the dvd plays fine in my pc using windvd, but when I put it into my toshiba standalone dvdplayer, the video is not centered? The begining of the show starts about 3/4 of the way on the screen and the show wraps back around so that on the left hand side of the screen is the rest of the show.
Example: show should look like ABCD, but actually looks like DABC on the screen. Hope you get this example. What We Do In Life, Echoes In Eternity.... -
If the mpeg is NOT DVD compliant, and you use DVDPatcher to make it acceptable to a DVD authoring program such as TmpGenc DVD Author (Which is what i think you mean by TmpGenc as opposed to the TmpGenc mpeg encoder), then what ends up in your DVD player is also not DVD compliant and so there is no guarantee it will play.
To ensure it will play you need to re-encode to DVD specs. Look in the tools section for free Mpeg encoders. There are 10 kinds of people in this world. Those that understand binary... -
or look for a playe rthat willplay your tivo files correctly, i use apex and sony to play dishnetwork files that are 544 by 480 with very long gops and they play fine, centered and fill the screen. only compaint is that ff & frev are not as fast as they should be, most likely due to the long gops.
take your disk along to a store thta lets you try the players and keep trying until you find one that:
a. plays the dvds correctly
b. has all the features you want
c. has a price you like
I chose a 400 disk Sony changer.
i'm sure most of the players there will handle the dvds fine. especyially the chaepo brands.
good luck -
I did mean TmpGenc DVD Author. Ok i have downloaded TMPGEnc (free encoder). So what do I need to change in my previous operation.

ok well TMPGEnc (free encoder) isn't working? Says that my mpg file can not open or unsupported? What I did was download tivo file, ran through directshow dump to get unlocked mpeg and then tried to open in the encoder and it won't let me....?
Under MPEG tools it list these:
Simple Multiplex
Simple De-multiplex
Multiplex
De-multiplex
Merge and cut
Do I want to use any of these to create a dvd compliant file? If so when? Before I edit with TMPGEnc Dvd Author or after? What We Do In Life, Echoes In Eternity.... -

one thing i've found that works well for kicking dvd players in to working with out of compliant videos is to set a chapter 4 seconds after the start of the video and after it has played back chapter (after 4 seconds), jump back to that chapter..
sorry about the run-on sentance, but i think you'll get the point..
i dont think you need to patch the VOB back to 480, i think just patching it to 720 to get TDA to accept it is more than fine. -
