I am test driving DivX 6 (was using 5.1 until now).

I am typically using DivX as an intermediate format during edit and feed this to CCE for MPEG2 encoding. For this purpose, I was using a constant quality setting (value = 1 for highest quality) and a Speed Setting of Fastest (didn't need motion search etc).

I am also typicaly working with interlaced video.

In trying DivX 6, I tried to configure the codec for the same settings I was using. I realized that the option to keep interlaced video goes away if the codec is tuned for fastest performance. The interlaced source option exists only if the speed setting "Balanced" (or slower) is selected.

Comparing the two codecs (5.1 vs 6) this way using VirtualDUB, version 6 seems to run twice as SLOW as version 5.1 !!

Has anyone else worked with DivX 6? Could this be a bug?
The more I learn, the more I come to realize how little it is I know.

I bought divx 6 and it works just fine. Though I use the home theater mode with one pass at 1000 bitrate (for stuff I don't share on the net). The quality and speed is excellent.

It might be a bug. Have you checked divx's website for a faq or something??

Have you considered using AVISynth? Use trim commmands to edit and then encode with CCE.

Also you could use XviD, Quant=2, iframe only, you can decrease settings to increase speed and still have interlaced enabled. In newer versions you can just set the Quality Preset to Real Time and you should get very fast speeds.

In what way would AVISYNTH help? Are you suggesting frame serving to CCE to avoid the intermediate codec altogether? I don't really like frame serving, mainly because I do lot's of batch conversions. Use VirtualDUB and premier a lot and work towards building several AVI that eventually get batch encoded by CCE. I found this scheme to work better for me, since I can do the manual work using intermediate files and have CCE work it's way on a separate machine overnight.

I also tried xVid. It works fine as far as encoding is concerned, is fast and good quality, however CCE won't accept XviD encoded files. It may have to do with the FOURCC code embedded in the AVI by XviD - something I need to check and perhaps experiment changing to DX50 or DIVX - so I am using DivX for some time now simply because I made CCE happy with the AVI files.

Will check the DivX site, as suggested, perhaps there is something wrong with the codec settings. If so, I will need to wait for a newer version.
