I can't even remember right now. I'm thinking maybe the first Brendan Fraser MUMMY movie back in 99. Though I think I bought that used at blockbuster.
I know I bought Phantom Menace on VHS because they waited to put out the DVD. I have bought some vhs in the last few years but mostly used or garage sale stuff.
For the last several years its been like 95% dvd. I'm sure it will be all dvd in the near future once the major studios cut back on vhs production. In fact they didn't even put out EPISODE 3 - Revenge of the Sith on VHS because they said there wasn't any profit in it anymore.

Probably Iron Maiden - Live After Death
......James....hmmmm....nice..... -
I just bought "Santabear's High Flying Adventure". It's not available on DVD. Just a few weeks earlier I got Disney's "The Blue Yonder" on VHS because it's also not available on DVD. Gonna transfer it to DVD. I've been looking for it on DVD for the last 3 years and gave up when I saw a brand new copy available on Amazon in NTSC format. NOT CHEAP EITHER!
What sucks even more is that it'll probably come out on DVD within the next year and I'll sell the VHS version I have for $10 or less. The version I have is the full and complete version as the UK version omits the scene at the gas station when the kid goes back in time.

It seems that once a DVD version is released, VHS tapes are good for nothing else but the bin!......James....hmmmm....nice..... -
Sometimes there's stuff on the VHS that's not on the DVD, though it's rare.

The last VHS tape I bought was the 1954 TV version of "Casino Royale" last year. It's not available on DVD commercially (as far as I know).
I think VHS tapes of films will continue to have a niche market for a little while longer but eventually die out. DVDs are firmly in control of the movie market now and may continue that way for a while ... maybe even a long while. I heard interesting statistics the other day regarding TV purchases. 85% of all new TVs manufactured are HDTV televisions. But even with that statistic, 85% of all owned televisions remain non-HDTV televisions. The success of either BluRay or HD-DVD in the marketplace pretty much depends upon HDTV ownership.
Another sobering thought close to home.
My ex-wife's company (Matsushita Kotobuki) took the big gamble last year that HDTV would be the wave of the future. They ceased production of all non-HDTV equipment and started producing only HDTV equipment (under various brand names) from their plant in Vancouver, Washington. This continued until January 30th when they ceased production and laid everybody off. And no, the plant was not moved overseas. It was just shut down.
Edit: My earlier percentage info was incorrect. Originally, I said that 85% of all TVs purchased today are HDTV televisions. I meant to say that 85% of all TVs "manufactured" today are HDTV televisions. Seeing as how 85% of all TVs "owned" today are not, I suspect consumers are trying to tell manufacturers something ... and the manufacturers aren't listening. -
Bad choice in doing only non-HDTV equipment. Regular TV will also have a nitche for a while. I know they are all supposed to go digital, but there's a lot going for regular TVs still. Lower cost is one big thing.
Video cassettes will also have a nitche for the fact that there is still some versatility in it. Though people prefer digital over analog recording, people are buying either Flash video or DV Cassette video cameras over disc cameras. I haven't ever used a disc camera, so I don't know the advantages of one over the other, but I do have a digital HI-8 and it's great. I copy it into my HDD and edit it how I like, then burn it to disc. Then I use the cassette again for something else. If I notice quality loss, I get a new cassette. -
For my own situation, VHS is still useful in a number of ways. In the first place, my only video camera is one of those old kind - uses full-sized VHS tapes. It still functions very well and the quality is pretty good. I can play the tapes on my VCR, into my Hauppauge capture card to burn onto DVDs. Last year, I found a bunch of brand-new JVC blank VHS tapes at Dollar Tree (yup, $1 each) and bought them. And, as long as my VHS camcorder still functions, I imagine I'll still be using this method to capture live video. But (grin), I'll still be transfering them to DVD.

Gremlins 2 on VHS has the John Wayne Film Takeover instead of the Hulk Hogan theater film takeover. However, the DVD put the Hulk Hogan version back, but didn't create a DVD extra with the John Wayne version. I thought both were pretty cool. So I have both the VHS & DVD versions. I did take the DVD version and made some menu edits and put the John Wayne version as an extra. Only took an extra 5MB of space on a DL disc. Pretty cool.
