  1. I was wondering if anyone has used their CC online for shopping or making some sort of payment? I'm looking to see if anyone has had any BAD experiences, and how to avoid them. I paid for a hosting company for and registered a domain but I did it via cheque and took forever. Now I want another domain name, but DAMN...I want it NOW. Anyone...

I've used mine online about a billion times. With only one bad story.

The card I used online hadn't been used in like 3 months, and suddenly I hard a charge from newegg.com (normally a great company to deal with) I found out it was for a purchase of a bunch of PC133 memory that was shipped to somewhere in CA. I tried to call them to figure out WTF but the guy on the other line was unhelpful.

So I disputed, and newegg disputed the dispute. So I wrote a nasty letter to the card company asking why when I want to order a tshirt and ship it somewhere else I have to call them ahead to let them know YET all this ram was shipped to CA no questions asked. They remove the charge and I've not seen it since.

I don't even think it was someone stealing my card info, I think newegg screwed up somehow. Either way its taken care of now.

However like I said thats the only bad thing of a TON of transactions. I think as long as you stick with the big dealers or poeple who use creditable transaction services it not more risky then handing someone in a store your card.

I use mine all the time..... It's about as secure as i can be as far as the connection between your comp and the server.

The issues usually arise if the server gets/is hacked or your machine gets/is hacked.

You are more likely to have your wallet stolen, get mugged, lose your wallet, or have a sneaky salesman steal your data..... than to have your credit card info stolen online.

This, of course, assumes you're not a major idiot, and responding spam that says "just give us your credit card number and we'll send you a free car" kind of thing.

Reminds me of what my instructor used to say: "What do you think is safer, shopping with your credit card online or being at a restaurant and giving your credit card to a waiter and letting him walk away with it?"

I've been shopping online for years, no problems.

Fraudulent CC charges are easily enough disputed so it's not really an issue.

  11. Two bad experiences out of hundreds of ok transactions.

One company, a big US domain agent, tried to bill my credit card a month in advance of my domain expiring. I had already applied to another much cheaper service which they then blocked. So I was out of a domain and could also have been out of money except my CC numbers had changed - thankfully.

A company unknown to me charged me $30 but it ended up being too much of a hassle sorting it out so I just changed my CC account. Some fraudulent CC charges are not easily disputed so it pays to be very very careful. Smart users get a CC with a restricted credit limit just to shop online. Be careful not to use a Debit Card or a credit card with a debit facility policy (like some Visa's) as a fraudster can then suck your bank account dry while you argue with the bank.

Most of the big online companies I've used are always e-mailing me to update my credit card info. As many times as I keep giving it to them, you'd think they'd be more careful with their records. Heck, I even get e-mail from places that I have no account with. I set up the account right then and there, and then the next day, they're asking me again. WTF??? Should I just post it everywhere to save time?

Be extremely careful about any company that contacts you to update CC info! Always verify it with the company before you provide any information by contacting their customer service directly. They don't have any need for this info except at the time you're making a purchase. More likely than not any solicitation for CC info is a scam....

I just went through that with a friend's domain. I think they make it hard on purpose so the account doesn't get hijacked. If you have access to the registrant email and your user name and password it shouldn't be that hard though. This is one reason I won't use the "hide my information" feature on some domain registration services, the domain isn't really registered to you......

I know once I got the email confirmation to change the account I had to login and go through about 2 or 3 "Are you sure you want to do this" screens.

That iPod is over 4 years old. There's got to be an updated version out there.

Probably the best way to put it above! Never, ever use a credit card at a resturaunt like that unless it's the type where you pay at the register and leave a cash tip (something like that).
