What's up all,
Hopefully someone can help me out, cause I can not figure out what hell is going on.
I had a basically brand new NEC Dual Layer DVD RW ND-3520A(Internal). My desktop died...So I took the internal drive out and put it into an external enclosure(to make it now an external DVD burner)
I plug it into my laptop(Windows 2003 Server) and it won't recognize a blank DVD.
Gives me an error:
"Windows can not read from this disk. The disk might be corrupted or it could be using a format not compatible with windows"
I have the jumpers set to "master" on the drive. The OS sees the drive, but everytime I put in a blank DVD it sees it as a "CD Drive" instead of "Blank Media"
Anyone got any suggestions?
Thanks very much in advance!!

Does your Windows 2003 Server have a compatible DVD decoder?
To check this Open Media Player, Click Tools/Options. If the DVD tab is unavailable you do not have proper DVD Decoding. Use your laptop provided CDs to install the decoder or visit the manufacturers website for more info. -
What is your interface to the DVD-RW? Probably has nothing to do with your problem, but it may help for diagnosis at some point.

Thanks for the input...
I installed Media Player 10 and I have no DVD tab, but what is weird is that the internal drive is a DVD ROM drive and it should see that one.
I was playing around last night within properities and the properities for the device, says that it is just a regular CD-ROM drive...
ROF, I have an IBM T42 laptop...What should I look for on the IBM site to download? A new driver? Or do they have codecs there?
Redwudz, do you mean, how an I trying to burn things? If so, I have tried with CloneDVD2 and they just copying and pasting files to the drive, but won't let me write to it.
It will READ a dvd, though...just not burn a blank one.
Thanks very much!!!!GO SOX AND PATS!!! -
Although it maybe a long shot. Try uninstalling and reinstalling your burning software. This will sometimes correct this.

DingoAce10, I was just curious whether you were using USB 2.0 or Firewire for the external box. I doubt that has any bearing on your problem, though.
One of my internal DVD burners shows up as a CD drive, but it still reads and writes DVDs with no problems. -
Interestingly enough I have a older Samsung burner (I forget the model) that always lists itself as a CD until I put in a DVD and then it switches to a DVD-RW listed drive. It works fine with both media and it's my only drive to ever do this. I installed this same model drive in two other customer computers and it did the same thing. Odd.
I'm thinking that a reinstall of the burning software will correct the issue at hand though. -
Thanks ALL for the input.
It is USB 2.0
I installed Nero 5.5 last night just to see if it saw the drive as a dvd burner and interestly, it doesn't find either burners(have an internal CD burner). Only displays "Image Recorder" as the only recorder.
Is it my jumpers? I have now switch the jumper of the external drive to "Master"(from some ones advice). I had it on "cable select". The only other place that I have not tried is "slave".
If there is no DVD in the drive it displays as DVD-RW. Again, it will read a DVD. I have decrypted a couple of them. But just doesn't write.
I am thinking that it has something to do with 2003 server OS.
Any other suggestions? Willing to try anything at this point.
Remember(from the original post) that I am on a laptop so can't install, and the DVD drive is an internal drive that is installed into an external encloser.
Thanks very much!!!!GO SOX AND PATS!!! -
Update your version of Nero, it's too old for the 3520. Not sure about the optical internal drive on the laptop, you didn't mention the model.
-
More than likely your current burning software is conflicting with nero thus it doesn't show any drives as being available. Uninstall any current burning software including that outdated version of nero. Download Nero 7 trial version. Click Here. Install that and you should see both drives appear in the Nero Software.
-
Thanks!!
The internal drive is just the IBM DVD/CD-RW drive that came with the laptop.
The burning Software they I was using was CloneDVD2 2.6.3
I already uninstalled Nero. figured it was to old.
I will uninstall CloneDVD2, I will download Nero 7 and install it, then install CloneDVD2 again....
Do you think that will do it?
Thanks again for the help!GO SOX AND PATS!!! -
You comment about a 'image' drive.... You didn't install InCD by chance? It has caused me weird problems in the past. I stay away from packet writing software because of that.
Also if you uninstall Nero, you might want to run the Nero CleanTool. Nero sometimes won't totally uninstall and the remnants can cause problems. -
HOLY CRAP! It worked!!! I am back in the game, BABY!!!
Put the DVD burner in a new enclosure (the original was built for both IDE and SATA drives, so not sure if that had something to do with it)
Uninstalled CloneDVD2
Installed Nero 7 trial version
First I burn a couple data discs and then tried for the movies…Reinstalled CloneDVD2 and it went like a champ!!!
NICE!!!
Not sure which of the 3 things I tried worked...I think it was the Nero drivers getting installed that did it, but don't know.
Thanks all!!!
Redwudz, not sure if that InCD was installed. Also where do I get that Nero CleanTool at? Thanks!GO SOX AND PATS!!! -
Your image drive was probably from CloneDVD. InCD comes with the Nero package, I believe. Some image drives interfere with the real drives operation. With any software package, I always select the 'custom' install when it gives that option.
That should give you a list of what it wants to install. If it's all OK, I go ahead with it all or go back to the full install and let it do it that way. Some install programs give no options.
This avoids installing unnecessary software. (Bloatware) , sometimes.
But it sounds like you solved your problem. -
Thanks!
Yeah, I did the full install of the trial and that was a mistake...I ended up removing a bunch of the installed products afterwards.
It loaded some "Autoplay" app and everytime I pluged in an external drive or put in a DVD it kicked off the autoplay, which didn't do it before that. I remove the autoplay so looks like I am back to normal.
I am just afraid to remove Nero 7 after the trial runs out, cause I think the "fix" happened when I installed the Nero Burning ROM app.
But can't be sure
As for the clean tool, if I run the one for Nero 5(which is what I installed before 7) will it do anything to the Nero 7 Install?
Thanks again!GO SOX AND PATS!!!
