Going from AVI [DX50/mp3/23.976] + .srt to DVD with ffmpegX 0.0.9t r4, sometimes I get hard coded (burned), sometimes selectable subtitles.
DVD ffmpeg, Quicktime decoding: selectable subtitles
DVD ffmpeg, other decoding: selectable subtitles
DVD mpeg2enc, Quicktime decoding: selectable subtitles
DVD mpeg2enc, mplayer decoding: hard coded subtitles
DVD mpeg2enc, ffmpeg decoding: selectable subtitles (but video is too fast)
Is 'DVD mpeg2enc, mplayer decoding' the reserved way of burning the subs, or is there another mechanism at work?

Yes, burning is a mplayer/mencoder feature, so for DVD, only "Decode with mplayer" will burn (or you may also burn to AVI then go to DVD without burning).
