It sounds like you have a corrupted startup file. Try this: Reboot and click the F5 key during startup. It's at the top of your keyboard. This should get you to a black page that has several choices. If no luck, try F8.

You can try 'Safe Mode' and that may get the computer up and running. You also have other choices, such as 'Use the last good setup' or similar.

You can try different modes. like 'step though' the startup.

If you can boot to 'Safe Mode', you should be able to run some diagnostics with the Windows troubleshooter.

Worst case, if you have the XP disc, you can do a repair or reinstall XP. This will preserve your files, but programs would have to be reloaded.

Microsoft is a good resource for these type of problems. If you can get to their site, they probably have the best solutions.

How long have you had the PC ?
When did you olast install windows XP on it ?

That last time I saw something like this it was because XP had not been activated within the timeframe.

  4. I would also recommend going into safe mode, its F8 on the computers I have used.

The first thing I always do is reboot ...... From my experiences I'm willing to claim that 90% of all computer problems are fixed with a reboot.
    If in doubt, Google it.
