  1. Hi everyone,

I am wondering if anyone has seen a HDTV version of a Log fire. I have one for the company on DVD now but its a regular DVD. I was wondering if anyone has made a 720p or 1080p version that is available as DIVX which our player can handle.

    Best regards

I dont think that there are any videos either 720P or 1080P that are commercially available.

DVD is your best bet at moment. You may have to wait until HD-DVD or Blu Ray is available.

There is an industry of people making this stuff.

I just searched for stock footage fire ...

As far as a log fire ... I'm not sure ... but there are loads of clips out there.

Depends. Unfortunately Kristian didn't say much about "our player". There are a few that will play HD, not sure how they work. I don't have one. I am impressed if Kristian's handles 1080p.

    Format
All footage is provided in Apple QuickTime format.
Kristian would certainly have to convert it.

Of course that kind of stuff is way out of my price range. I'd just get an HDV cam and film the log.

  6. Hi guys,

The player in question is a KISS DP-1100. True 1080 might not be the case - the box says:

"Component video out with progressive scan and HD upsampling with support for 720p and 1080i."

This through a DivX for example, what that actually translates to in reality remains to be seen. I'll burn a HD divX on a CD and try it out.

    Best regards

A plasma display will also put out real heat.

According to the specs, max supported resolution is 1600 X 1200 pixels. You may acheive true 720P output but not true 1080P or 1080i output.

  9. Kris,

For the real facts ... do your test ...

But ... in case it was not clear from the other posters ... your player has a Sigma Designs 8500 (type) decoder chip. You have to step up to the Sigma 8620 to be able to decode HiDef DivX data. This site has a Kiss player listed with that chip ... but the Kiss site does not seem to list it.

Your chip does appear to have an 'optional up-scaler' ... but that just means it will resize a standard def image for you.

Look here for a comparison of Sigma chips ... video decoding section.

    http://www.sigmadesigns.com/products/selection_guide.htm

BTW: I have an XCard which has the 8400 series chip. It produces an excellent image ... but I got a Roku which uses an ATI decoder to be able to work with HD mpeg2 source.

The Avel player I linked (a review) above and another one called Buffalo have the 8620 sigma chips and supposedly play HD from a disc.

The Avel player will play HD files (ts, Mpeg, Divx/Xvid) from a disc, network, and USB port.

I understand that WPIX in NYC and the WB network will be televising the Yule Log in HD on Christmas day. Don't know if it will be true HD or an upsampled DVD version.
