Got it cheap off E-bay because it has a problem.
Seller said problem with the video is that the picture is jumpy and won't stay still.
The main problem is that the picture is JUMPY and flickers. Adjusting the tracking manually makes it slightly better, but you cannot get the picture to stay steady. The audio is fine and the video colors are all fine, it's just that the picture won't stay still. Other tapes may be different when played. This problem was noticed after the unit was unplugged and moved to another location and plugged in while a VHS tape was inside the unit.
To me, his discription makes it sound like a transport problem, but I'm no expert...just a mildly talented amature.
    So....good deal or not?
    Are these machines fixable?
    Are parts avaliable?

    Dedicated PC for video work....check!
    Lots of hard drive space...check!
    All necessary software aquired...check!
    JVC S9800 VCR.....maybe check!

Winters comin' and I've got tapes to convert!

  2. i emailed Studio Sound describing the problem with my Sony and they recommended which part to replace. I made the fix last night and did a quick check and it seemed to work. I'm going to test further tonight. See what people here think, but email them as well. They have an Ask A Tech link on each page and will respond within 24 hours.

The unit is out of alignment. That could be fixed for about $70 at my local authorized JVC repair shop.
