Trying to convert a large vob (changed the ext to mpeg) file from pal to nstc using DivxToDVD trial version. It say it takes more than 7 hours to convert is that right? Just in case the file has these properties
Video: MPEG2 Video 720x576 (16:9) 25.00fps 9800Kbps [Video]
Audio: Dolby AC3 48000Hz stereo 192Kbps [Audio]
Subtitle: DVD Subpicture [Subtitle]
Also I tried using TMPGEnc Plus 2.5 trial verison using the following directions on http://www.johnisme.com/tmpg.shtml but I was only able to convert first 20 seconds or so. Help will be appreciated.

Changing the extension from VOB to MPEG does not give you an mpeg file. VOBs contain more than just video and audio data, so simply switching extensions may in fact cause you more trouble than it is worth. You should demux the VOB properly first, then see if the situation improves.

So here is what I did: I took DGindex and used to create an index of the vob file that I have. Then I took TMPGENC and used it to encode into DVD using the following instructions http://www.johnisme.com/avi1.shtml and created an mpg file. I took this mpg file and began to proceed to simple demux as per instructions and it seems that it converts the audio to an mp2 file. Then took dgpulldown to convert the m2v file into 25-29.97 fps and used Ifoedit to create a VIDEO_TS folder from the dgpulldown file. When did a DVD Play test with Ifo edit there was no audio playing. Is it becuase of the mp2 format? Also the video was interlaced, does that have anything to do with it?

Now match the new video file (that DGPulldown outputted) with the original audio file (that DGMPGDec outputted) and there you go.
Also no need to mux the video and audio together before you input into your DVD authoring software. At least most DVD authoring software can accept individual files with no need to mux first.

Here is how i do it,
I dont even use DGindex, although i believe you can use DGindex to get a raw .AC3 file, it's been awhile since i used DGindex.
If the original PAL dvd has a 5.1, 2.0, ac3 audio track i just use DVD Decrypter in IFO mode to demux/rip a single .M2V file, and a single .AC3 file as the AC3 audio is going to take up very little space and will be more compatible all the way around, not to mention if it's 5.1 you want to keep that original.
Then just do the encoding with TMPGEnc of the video from 720X576 to 720x480 NTSC, leaving the framerate at 25.00fps, deinterlacing as needed with the filters in TMPGEnc and any other setting you need such as aspect ratio ect.
Then use dgpulldown on the new M2V file to change the flags from 25 to 29.97fps, you don't need Ifoedit to create a VIDEO_TS folder, when you have the new dgpulldown M2V file, you can just load the new video and the original AC3 audio file into your dvd authoring program, TDA, DVD-lab PRO, W.E. and there ya go...
There are more things like bitrate, but you can experiment to fill a dvd with what you want depending on the quality settings and how long the video is, and menu's, extra's ect.
I have put up to 3 hours of video on a dvdr converting this way with GREAT results!!!
As in the link FulciLives posted but i have refined some things and done a few things a little diff. using just TMPGEnc and not using avisynth, as TMPGEnc can do the things you would otherwise use avisynth for if you are comfortable with all the options and settings in TMPGEnc.
I'm sure there are prob. little details i may have forgotten, but you seem to have a pretty good jist of the conversion so far
P.S.

So far you are the only one who has noticed, or at least said anything

I understand now.
Although I must say it isn't the same now and even knowing what to look for (with no tricks) I do not see it. Either it isn't there or it is going by way too fast now.

*** EDIT ***
I was using NETSCAPE just now when I said what I said above ... just started playing around with NETSCAPE this evening.
I switched back to INTERNET EXPLORER and it is now obvious to me (as it was before).
So in short the two browsers "see" the thing we are talking about much much differently!

So here is what I did: I have had some success, I used dgpindex to create a d2v file and used TMPGENC to create a m2v file in a non-interlaced form. I took dgpulldown to encode the m2v file from 25 to 29.97 fps. Took the new file form dgpulldown and the original ac3 file extracted from dgpindex and created a vid folder from dvdauthor. Took ifo edit to create another vid folder and used ifoedit to create an image file that new folder and burned into a DVD. It does play on my stand alone player, but with no chapters. I think I should have added them with DVDauthor.
