I have been studying the posts for the last week attempting the learn the most efficient way to Rip & Burn my DVD Collection to backup DVD's. I have learned that mac the ripper is the choosen ripping software. The problem is what is the best next step. It appears that I can go straight to Toast 7.0 and drop the Video_TS folder in the video tab and burn. However I have seen many of you swear by DVD2one. Can anyone tell me what you suggest is the best method for this process and which software to use. Please keep in mind that I do not have a double sided burner only single. Also once I rip the DVD's, they all are about 7 gig in size. Thanks

  2. As you point out... your DVDs are too large to fit onto a standard blank DVD... so you need to compress them.

DVD2One, Toast 7 and Popcorn all compress the source to fit... Toast 7 and Popcorn add in the burning in one step.

DVD2One has a new version that also adds burning, but I haven't heard from anyone who has tried it... plus... when it comes to burning I'd stick with Toast since they've been doing it for alot longer.

Some people think DVD2One gives better quality from compression, but I personally think the quality is the same as for Toast and Popcorn. DVD2One is faster to compress... it will save you 20 minutes probably... not much difference and certainly not worth the high price.

For only a few $ more than DVD2One you can buy Toast, which does everything DVD2One does plus tons more. For less than DVD2One you can buy Popcorn.

Thanks for the info.. very helpful. I attempted to burn one last night. everything seemed to worked perfectly until the last two minutes on the timer, at which point it seemed to lock up. Any thoughts.

ok, macuser, we know you are Pro-Toast/Popcorn,
but let's remember to point out all the differences:

    PopCorn:
Pros: Functionailty with Toast ( Toast 7 is all in one version of both apps)
One Click compress and burn of most VIDEO-TS folders
Cons: Doesn't handle subtitles well; Cannot "dial" down the
settings to get content to fit to disc; no chapter by chapter or
two Video_TS movie join features, has some issue with MTR 3.0 output.

    DVD2ONeX:
Pros: Handles Subtitles, ability to "dial" down the settings to get
content to fit properly to disc; Chapter by Chapter, Cell by Cell,
extraction of content; Can join two Video_TS folders from two
diffrent rips to make one DVD; handles newer output from
    MTR 3.0r11 and MTR3.0r12 easily.
Cons: Cannot burn natively from within the app
    (fixed in DVD2ONEX 2.0)

  6. OK, yes TerryJ is correct...

DVD2One has some very powerful additional settings you may use sometimes, like cell by cell extraction.

Toast & Popcorn go for the ease-of-use "get in, get it done, get on with you life" settings - the 20% of the settings you are going to do 80% or more of the time.

Toast can join title from multiple VIDEO_TS folders and make a new DVD.

MTR3 works fine with Toast & Popcorn.

Not to nitpick, but DVD2ONEX can Author multiple Video TS
joins from MTR ripped output of single disc Video TS.
Last I had read, you needed MPEG Streamclip, Sizzle or ffmepgx
to extract the VOB files from the ripped output, and then Toast
could re-author those to a new disc? Is this still true?
Toast and Multiple Video TS, among others

    And

yes, the problems have seen to have been with MTR 2.66 and Popcorn.
Most reports I have read over at the MTR forums suggest that Popcorn
plays well ( except for Main Feature Extraction on certain discs)
with MTR 3.0.xxx. I stand corrected.

Toast 7 can extract the MPEGs from one or more ripped VIDEO_TS folder as either individual titles or individual chapters without need for Streamclip or other application. Toast then can author and burn a new DVD from those extracted MPEGs. If the extracted MPEGs video exceed 4.3x GB and the user wants to burn this to a single-layer disc, the process is to Save as Disc Image and then use the Toast 7 copy window to compress the content of the too-large image file for burning to a single-layer DVD. Video from Multiple VIDEO_TS with Toast 7

Popcorn, meanwhile, does not work with extracted MPEGs nor does it author a VIDEO_TS folder as does Toast. So Popcorn cannot join the content from multiple VIDEO_TS folders, but Toast 7 can.

Thank you for the information on the best software. I have decided to rip on MTR and then go straight to Toast 7.0. I have several friends that have successfully done this. However I am still having problems with toast software locking up on the last 1 - 5 minutes of the burn. Any thoughts?
