  1. Hi there,

First off thanks for these great forums!

I am shooting an event for a client and need to burn to DVD+R DL because of the length of the event. I've read places about book type and setting custom layer breaks, but my question is about duplicating.

If I author a DVD+R DL in Encore CS5 and bring it over to a DVD duplicator machine, will my layer break and book-type settings carry over from the master disk? Or is there a special method for duplicating Dual layer DVDs. Also, On my duplicator all the drives have the DVD DL logo. Does this mean the duplicator can duplicate DL's?

    Thanks for your help!

Make an ISO image of the master disc - burn them as needed.

I would read the manual that came with the duplicator, as it should explain whether or not it can both read the layer break and transfer that same point to the writers.

An ISO image is of limited value: ISO images (usually) only hold baked data, not raw data. The layer break is really part of the raw data. A more appropriate image would be BIN+CUE, CCD+IMG+SUB, NRG, CDI.

Of course, those only work if the software recognizes it. That's not a problem with PC-controlled duplicators, but for truly standalone duplicators (no pc attached), you need to find out if it supports a disc image format that also includes raw data. This COULD be a superset of ISO...

Yes, if ALL the drives have the DL logo, they OUGHT to be able to burn DL end-to-end.

I don't know what info your Encore is putting into whatever disc image formats are available to it. It could be it keeps that in external metadata for it's own purposes, so an ISO transferred to the duplicator might NOT include the layer break info necessary.

A way to get around that is to let Encore do the burning of the MASTER disc, and then let the duplicators do the imaging themselves. Very likely it has some facility for storing/managing layer break info - within the IMG or externally.

Note: there likely is some setting in the duplicator that chooses between raw and baked modes, just like there is often a similar choice between CD imaging WITH or WITHOUT full PQ subcode support.
