  1. I have a file with a name that looks like: name.CD1.avi

I do not think it is an avi file. None of my editors, etc will read it and I think I have all the major codecs loaded.

I tried a few programs which are supposed to recognize and give you info on video files. None of them recognized the file.

    Any help out there ?

    thanks,

try opening it with something like isobuster or winrar and check to make sure it isn't a mis-named disc image as "cd1" might imply.

...you don't happen to have that silly default "hide extension of known file types" activated?
GSpot and/or AVICodec should be able to handle most media files.
