I recently bought a new DVD640i because there were on 25% off sale last week. No software CD was included and I couldn't return them because they didn't have another in stock for exchange and their policy forbid refund on open electronics merchandise. I could drive to another nearby store but 50 miles at $3.00 per gallon of gas, I'd rather nag someone at HP or download software instead.

So I tried HP web site. They wanted $10 for a CD! Why should I pay for something when it's HP fault and not mine? Anyway I tried again at that store a few hours ago, that store still don't have any in stock for exchange.

I'm getting a bit annoyed that I can't fully use the new burner because HP screwed up or something and they don't offer free download or free replacement CD. My copy of Nero can handle this drive but only as single layer at max 4x (burn always failed at 8x or 16x), I was hoping to use DL feature and make single backup of all photos I got. (over 6GB total)

Is there a place I could download for free either an update for Nero 5.5.10.56 (hated 6, don't want to upgrade to 6) or another software that works with DVD640. Also I'd need something for Lightscribe feature as well.

    TIA

    impmon2,

All of those files are on the HP web site. Look under support and downloads for that particular dvd burner.

Nag the store instead. I take it you bought this closed box, and only opened it to get the product? You paid for the product with the reasonable expectation that everything THEY said (by displaying the box) was inside was really included inside. Let them know you will be suing them for false advertising. The contract of the initial sale (you exchanging your money for the item) was made under false pretenses, this came before and trumps any return policy they have. It doesn't even make it to 'did you opent he box?', because it doesn't get past 'did they sell you what they claimed?'. No different than if they sold you a brick in that box instead of the drive.

If they don't immediately give you your money back, get the manager and ask very loudly in front of a lot of people why they STOLE your software out of the box! Just as much as their policies try to assume but can't prove that you must have stolen the software, they equally can't prove that they didn't. Since they'll claim that it must have been in there from HP, and since you KNOW you didn't get or steal it, as the only other party with custody of it you can assume they stole it. Just keep asking very loudly why they stole your software out of the box!

@slacker: I've already tried HP web site. They only offered 3 download links for XP and 2k: 2 different firmware update and an update for Lightscribe. No actual software to download. Here's the direct link: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareList?dlc=en&lc=en&product=455746&lang=en&cc=us&os=61

@Alan: looks like I'll have to put the pressure on them. Good thing I used my credit card, if they still refused and still don't have any in stock, I'll just do a chargeback.

It just sucks that I get one cheaper than anywhere else and it's incomplete.

That's the ticket. I'd contact the credit card company immediately and get things rolling. There's no excuse for the way you've been treated.

    impmon2,

I believe you'll need Nero 6 to burn dual layer. Nero 5 does not support them.

    regards,

To make you feel better, let me say that I too purchased the HP dvd640 drive (external) and, while I love the drive, the software that came with the drive was total horse crap. It came with Arcsoft and Sonic scaled-down garbage, just IMO. You are really not missing anything, and you would have purchased something better anyway once you took all the software for a test drive.

I just picked up the dvd740 yesterday as well and it was packaged with Nero Lite and some other "stuff". Works fine!

SureThing 4SE is included with the 640 and 740 drives as well, which is good, but it you buy Nero 7, you don't NEED SureThing 4SE.

If you have the device driver and updated Lightscribe software, you're 95% there. If you need an all-in-one package, I would purchase Nero 7 which is Lightscribe enabled. It's only $69 for cryin out loud. The self-proclaimed pros whine about the size of it, but it's the best all-in-one out there, i.e. editing, authoring, burning, InCD rewrite software, data backup, photos, media player, etc. And if you need something for video particularly, well, on this site there is just about anything you could ever need.

Two years into the video thing full time and I'm cruising along now with Vegas+DVD, plus some minor freeware and inexpensive utilities I can't do without.

It's a great drive. Don't knock HP. It happens!

    To reiterate,

    Nero is better than Sonic
    Nero is better than Arcsoft
    Nero is Better than SureThing

    So buy Nero 7!
