  1. Hi,

I have a LG brand DVD ROM / CD-RW combo drive which has suddenly started acting strange. It is not playing any VCD or SVCD properly whether its a commercially purchased disk or a disk created by me. The video is jerky and sometimes stops completly. I generally use WinDVD or MPC to play disks on my PC. However, these disk are ok and play fine in a stand-alone player. So the problem lies in the PC. The drive is able to play DVDs without any problem.

I had observed the same problem with one of my earlier Pioneer DVD drive installed in my older PC. It does no detect any CD, VCD or SVCD. However it plays DVDs fine.

I was wondering whether this problem is with DVD drives firmware. Which may be programmed to stop detecting non-DVDs after sometime !!!!! You never know these manufacturers. I dont think there is a codec problem because I am able to play files from my hard disk without any problem.

I recently un-installed ffdshow from my PC just to check. But the problem still persists.

    Anyone any ideas.

  2. I have even tried removing the DVD drive logically through the device manager. Sometimes this solves the problem because when windows adds the device again it re-configures the drives.

But alas my problem still remains.

  5. Try cleaning the lens with a blast of compressed air. CD and DVD are read with different wavelengths of laser, could be a failing laser can still do DVD but not CD. Had one recently that stopped reading burned DVD, could still read commercial DVD or CD of any kind.

If cleaning does not work, chuck it.
