    Hello Everyone,

I recently bought the Samsung DVD-HD870/XAA Player (region 1) , looking at its configurations that it will literally play anything -audio cd (worked), mp3 (worked), wma (worked), jpeg (worked), divix(avi) (worked), vcd (din't work), dvds (R1 worked, other regions dint work (R3 & R2)) all connected through TV (video) mode.

Need help with the 2 problems mentioned below :

    1. I am unable to unlock the region code and the firmware version installed in the player is : 052107.02.87iHXAA. After an extensive research online, noticed that the European models can be downgraded and then unlocked to work as multi region DVD Player but there was no code to unlock the US Model.

If someone can provide me the code to unlock this DVD player for US model will appreciate it.

    2. Unable to play VCD, I am not able to play any home made videos (cd-R) and original movie dvds in this player. I checked the vcds they are not Super VCDs (SVCD).

The formats used in these file are as follows :

    A. In the home made VCD (AVSEQ01.DAT in MPEGAV folder) and (ENTRIES.VCD & INFO.VCD in VCD folder),

    B. In the Original movie VCD (folder CDDA (no file), CDI with files(CDI_APPL.VCD, VCD_BACK.DYV and VCD_BTN.C8), EXT with files (LOT_X.VCD, and SCANDATA.DAT), KARAOKE (no file), MPEGAV with files (MUSIC01.DAT, MUSIC02.DAT, MUSIC03.DAT and MUSIC04.DAT), SEGMENT ( no file) and VCD with files ( ENTRIES.VCD, INFO.VCD and PSD.VCD).

Please let me know if this can be fixed.

    Thank you in advance.

Quite often there differences between region versions preventing the same hacks from working on both. Also of note, is the fact that the UK version has to be downgraded before it can be unlocked. Which means the newer firmware versions are now locked to prevent any codes from working.

If there are any codes, they will be in the DVD Hacks section.

As for VCD, many players don't support VCD. It is a hardware related issue and there isn't anything that you can do to "fix" it. It doesn't support VCD. Your only option is to convert your VCD's to another supported format.

It is also better to do a little research before buying hardware to ensure it will do everything that you want. In this case region free and VCD support.

Does it play home-burned Audio CD's/MP3CD's ? Because it sounds like it doesn't like any homemade stuff.

Test it out with a pressed VCD...
What do the Players guides (<---) say about that model?

Quite often, it's also not just a matter of region coding, but PAL/NTSC tv system problems, and it's well known that PAL player can often do a passable NTSC, whereas an NTSC player VERY RARELY can do PAL--at all.

If this is a new purchase, I'd say take it back and get a better machine. (Although I find it shameful that any NEW machines would still be having these problems) Bring along test discs with you this time.

Strongly agree with Cornucopia - you definitely need to test with a pressed VCD. There are authoring differences between pressed VCDs and typical home made VCDs and these can be enough to cause your player to have fits. The use of MUSIC*.DAT is unusual although legal and perhaps the firmware is expecting the more common AVISEQ*.DAT. It is also possible that the unit simply doesn't support VCD, although with the other support I'd say that's unlikely.

According to the specs (here: http://www.samsung.com/he/products/dvdplayer/hypervisiondvdplayers/dvd_hd870.asp?page=Specifications ) this player supports SVCD and VCD. So your problem would appear to be related to your discs. Also, based on reviews I read in various places, this player is average at best. And most users weren't very pleased with it's performance or spotty file support.

I had it tested with the pressed VCD, no luck with that either. The home made audio & mp3 plays perfectly. As per Krispy's Quote this player supports Vcds ( as mentioned in Samsung's specifications) but not sure why it doesn't work. I am researching for the hack to unlock the region code for the US region.

If I am not able to get any hack by this month end I will have it returned. Got it for real cheap deal of 20, its a shame if I have to return it.
