For dvd video what would be the lowest bitrate before it take its affect on the video. I have a couple of videos that I want to put on a dvd that are at 9200 and I want to get a few videos on one disc and I though about lowering the bitrate. Thanx All.

It depends on the amount of fast motion, the overall quality of the video (is it from VHS source, does it have lots of noise) etc. There is no correct or definative answer to your question, sorry.

The best I can offer is 'when you start to notice the quality change, you have gone too far'

What technique are you looking to use ? Re-encoding to a lower bitrate will generally give you much better results than transcoding down using something like Shrink (this is not a slight on Shrink, which I still use form time to time, just a fact of video life).

  4. Use an MPEG encoder that supports constant quality (like TMPGEnc). Pick a quality level you find acceptable and encode. That way you will know that you have the lowest average bitrate while maintaining the quality you want.

Just to add. What I do is clip out a representative section of the video, about 5 minutes, and encode that with several different settings. It will give you a good idea without spending too much time.
