    Guys

I'm feeling more stupid all the time here.

I have now produced my AVI file, understand more about aspect ratios! and stripped out the ac3 audio.

My next step (i think) is to encode the avi to an mpg. My copy of tmpgenc express refuses to run properly but I also have tmpgEnc + so can use that for the time being.

Now I'm a little confused yet again. Am I right in thinking that having produced my mpg file i can then load it and the ac3 audio file into an authoring package before burning to my dvd? If so will any of them do or does it need to be one that supports the ac3 file format?

Sorry for the many and varied stupid questions.

Your not stupid mate, everyone has to learn.

If you you have an MPEG2 with the correct properties eg resolution, framerate for PAL,25fps ect...and an AC3 audio file with a sampling rate of 48000,you can load them up into TMPGEnc DVD Author (Great authoring app) and author to compliant DVD Video Files eg VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS folders containing IFO and VOB files
You will need the TMPGEnc AC3 plugin though to decode the AC3.It's fairly cheap to purchase.

To decode yes, but in this case he merely wants to author it to DVD so the plug-in is unecessary.

As ZippyP says-you do NOT need the plug-in if its already AC3; only to encode TO AC3. And yes TDA is an excellent authoring app. It will take 2ch and 6ch AC3 also.

  5. Sorry.
Because I own the AC3 plugin,I figured that the AC3 plugin needed to be installed to decode the AC3 audio file in order to author.
I just uninstalled the plugin and sure enough it DOES author the AC3.

So targus you only need TDA to complete your project.Sorry for giving you the incorrect information.

BTW I'm also feeling more stupid all the time here.

P.S So whats the point in it decoding AC3 when it can author without!

laspis59:-Having the plug-in installed will encode the audio (wav for example) to AC3 when authoring. So there is USUALLY no need to convert audio to AC3 (2ch) BEFORE authoring unless it is 6ch. Because not everyone has the plug-in, there are still times when encoding to AC3 BEFORE authoring is relevant.

As for giving wrong information-don't worry about it. We are all still learning and we are picking up new tips all the time.

And yes to feeling stupid also at times.
