    Ok need some help from the experts. I just received my new Dell XPS600 3.2 Dual Processor, 4 GB Memory. I just re-installed DVD Decrypter 3.5.4 and DVDShrink 3.2. Before on my 1.8 Mgz Pentium computer with 1GB memory, i can dvdshrink in 10 minutes, the 1:20 minutes or less dvd's. I bought this system because I started to buy more cartoon dvd's and backing them up since my kids really detroy them. The system is Windows 64. Now I shrink and it takes 1 hour where it used to take 10 minutes. Any Idea why. Thanks all.

    Oh I forgot to mention I installed the dvd burners myslef. Benq 120 Pro and Benq 1640. Would I lose speed if I make a mistake with master vs slave settings? If they were backwards? Thanks again.

    Probably wouldn't make much difference in speed. Most newer MBs are very flexible as to assignments of drives.

    Easy rule, the end of the cable is master, the middle is slave. As long as you don't have both set the same, no problem. I assume you have them both on the secondary IDE channel, one as slave, one as master? Most DVD drives are set as slave at the factory.

    You can check them for PIO/DMA settings in Control Panel>System>Hardware>Device Manager>IDE AA/ATAPI Controllers. Your Boot should be master, Primary Channel. You can put your burner as Primary, slave or secondary channel, master and slave, depending on what hard drives you have on the system. All drives should be DMA. The HD 4 or 5, the opticals 2 or better, no PIOs.

    If you have SATA, put them anyway you want, just make sure the jumper settings are correct.

    The seetings are in the Primary IDE channel is Transfer Mode = DMA if Available and current transfer mode = PIO Mode. Is this correct?

  7. is your system ruiing really slow while you are ripping?

  8. Maybe the slow down is due to 64 bits windows since shrink and dvd decrypter are written for 32 bits windows.

    No, that's a problem. It will slow things down. You shouldn't see any PIO modes in use. The standard procedure is to uninstall the channel that's in PIO mode and reboot and the OS will reset it to DMA. If it doesn't, check your jumper settings on the optical drives and the position of the drives on the IDE cable as mentioned.

    RAID 1 should be OK, assuming it was set up that way to start with. As I understand, you've just added the two optical drives, everything else was already set up?

    Yes I was running 32 Bit? Now here is a question. Lets assume I have one dvd burner set for master and the other for slave, But it has to be the other way around? Will it still work if I woulod have them backwards? And thanks all for you trying to help.

    Isn't the Primary IDE channel normally where the hard drive is connected? (It is on all the computers I've owned). I've never tried to uninstall the Primary channel- not sure how that would work since the OS would immediately be gone when the Primary is uninstalled.

    BobK, You will have to reboot after uninstalling the primary channel. The OS will find the boot drive and re-install the drivers and the channel. May take a second reboot, but it does it all automatically. I've done it a few times.

    64 bit mode shouldn't make any difference. I run XP64 and for Shrink or Decrypter or other 32bit programs, it just uses 32bit mode.

    I normally put my DVD ROM as master, but only because I want it to show up first. A few DVD RWs might like to be set as master, but I've done them both ways and never saw any difference. If you have two burners, shouldn't make a difference. If all else fails you can switch them. You do want to check the jumpers to see they are set properly for the drives position on the cable.

    I suspected that's what would happen. But since I never had a need to uninstall it I didn't want to try and find out that the computer would never find my C drive again.

    I think that would depend on the drive and the particular computer. I've set jumpers up wrong several times. At least once the drives didn't show up in windows. Other times the drives worked but didn't work correctly- various problems.

    Ichanged the jumper settings, still the same. I am using Interface SPTI Microsoft. Could that be it? I just tried ripping, again 2X speed. It really is a pain.

    SPTI is standard, AFAIK,on all NT versions of Windows, including XP 32 and 64. Should cause no problems.

    I was wondering, do both of your DVD drives show as operating in PIO mode? PIO will run much slower than DMA, both for reading and burning.

    One other thing, are your IDE cables 80 conductor? 40 conductor cables could be a problem. The floppy cable appearance is similar to a 40 conductor cable. A 80 conductor, such as the one that goes to your boot drive has a finer appearance. Probably if it came with the computer it's the right one, though. Just a thought.

    If you have Nero, you may have Nero Infotool under the Nero Toolkit heading, if not you can get it from Nero:

    http://ww2.nero.com/nero6/en/Info_Tool.html

    It will tell you a lot more about your DVD drives, modes and other info.

    Have you tried uninstalling the IDE channel yet?

  20. Try ripping the raw files(VOBS) to hard drive without decrypting.. maybe you have changed settings in dvd shrink to deep analysis=yes.

    Try changing firmware on your burners ... new drives may have rip lock speed throttle on dvd-video only.. try for a liggy and jiggy firmware
    (see cdfreaks.com for stuff that WILL void the warranty)

    Here is what I see:

    Primary IDE
    Device = 0
    Device type = Auto Detection
    Transfer Mode = DMA if available
    Current transfer = PIO Mode

    Primary IDE
    Device = 1
    Device type = Auto Detection
    Transfer Mode = DMA if available
    Current transfer = PIO Mode

    SecondaryIDE
    Device = 0
    Device type = Auto Detection
    Transfer Mode = DMA if available
    Current transfer = Not applicable

  22. If you can't change PIO to DMA:
    1.Go to the BIOS(CMOS) and make sure drives are set to Auto.
    2.Reinstall the chipset drivers from the CD that came with your PC.*
    3.If that doesn't work uninstall the Primary and Secondary channels and reboot.
    *you might have to get the 64bit drivers from their website.

    I'm using a SATA boot so it's a little different, But:

    Primary IDE
    Device = 0
    Device Type = Auto Detection
    Transfer Mode = DMA if Available
    Current Transfer = Ultra DMA Mode 4 (Sony DVD-RW)

    Primary IDE
    Device = 1
    Device Type = Auto Detection
    Transfer Mode = DMA if Available
    Current Transfer = Ultra DMA Mode 2 (DVD ROM)

    Secondary IDE
    Device = 0
    Device Type = Auto Detection
    Transfer Mode = DMA if Available
    Current Transfer = Ultra DMA Mode 5 (250GB ATA133 Hard Drive)

    Secondary IDE
    Device = 1
    Device Type = Auto Detection
    Transfer Mode = DMA if Available
    Current Transfer = Not Applicable (No drive on this channel)

    As you can see, the hard drive is DMA 5; The DVD ROM is DMA 2;
    the DVD RW is DMA 4. There are NO drives in PIO mode and there shouldn't be.

    The slowest is the DVD ROM, DMA 2 is normal for it.
    The hard drive should be DMA 4 or 5.

    My other two drives are SATA boot and edit drive, 80Gb each. This is on my multimedia computer, not the one in my profile.

    The laptop I am typing on at the moment has a DMA 5 boot drive and a DMA 2 DVD ROM drive.

    It depends on what's plugged in where. Here's what I have:

    Primary IDE
    Device = 0
    Device type = Auto Detection (not changable in this window)
    Transfer Mode = DMA if Available
    Current transfer = Ultra DMA Mode 5 (this is my boot HD)

    Primary IDE
    Device = 1
    Device type = Auto Detection (not changable in this window)
    Transfer Mode = DMA if Available
    Current transfer = Ultra DMA Mode 5 (this is a 2nd HD)

    SecondaryIDE
    Device = 0
    Device type = Auto Detection (not changable in this window)
    Transfer Mode = DMA if Available
    Current transfer = Ultra DMA Mode 2 (DVD Writer)

    SecondaryIDE
    Device = 1
    Device type = Auto Detection (not changable in this window)
    Transfer Mode = DMA if Available
    Current transfer = Ultra DMA Mode 2 (CD Writer)
