  1. The Flexible Recording feature on my Panasonic DVD Recorders has been the main reason I've kept them...I like being able to tailor the PQ based on the length of the VHS tape I'm dubbing over.

Are they the only brand with this feature?

    No way.

JVC and Pioneer have it too, and both of those machines are far better quality recorders.

    I have a Pioneer DVR-531H-s which is a stand alone DVD recorder with a built-in 80GB HDD.

It has several recordable "modes" with fixed lengths. For instance there is a setting for 90 minutes, 95 minutes, 100 minutes etc.

So you pick the one that is closest (but longer) than your source. For example ... with a 92 minute movie you would pick the 95 minute mode.

There is also a speed called XP+ that can be used only when recording to the HDD as this speed will use a bitrate of approximately 15,000kbps ... the benefit of this mode is it can be used when you aren't sure how long the source is ... then you can do accurate editing ... then copy to a DVD-R or DVD-RW using the OPTIMISE option which re-encodes it (in real time) to a bitrate that will make it fit perfect on the DVD.

    P.S.
When I bought my Pioneer DVR-531H-s at WALMART it was $337 plus tax and that was only about 6 weeks ago but just recently the price went to just under $300 (I think it is 297 or 296 now). In short one hell of a deal.
