Not being a gamer, I know nothing of the architecture of a game, but I'm interested in ripping a couple of soundbytes and hopefully isolating dialogue from the music. I know how to do this off of a 5.1 AC3-encoded DVD with no problem. When it comes to gaming, I'm curious about several things:

Would a new game likely have 5.1 sound?
If so, would it likely be an AC3 file?
Is the structure of the disc like a DVD?
Ultimately, what is involved in ripping a couple of soundbytes from a game? I'm mainly interested in a couple of lines from a game. If the audio is in 5.1, I'd like to separate the streams.

Thanks for any help anybody can provide.

Audio from games is far more complex that than of dvd movies .

I have yet too see any using ac3 audio .

Sound streams containing both audio (background or other) , and vocals , are for most parts , a single stream .

Recording audio from games is easy , just use a stereo player to record , then record the playback from stereo to pc via line-in .

Seperating the streams (background and vocal) , requires a lot of hard work on a pc , and good software will be needed with strong filters .

This is best left to full blown professional media centers .

For those of us that do this all the time , it's just not worth trying too seperate them apart , just enjoy what you can get out of the captured audio , and enjoy .

Goldwave has good filters , and is not expensive , I have heard some good results from others using it too filter out non-essential audio from streams .
