Hi, I just bought a JVC GR-D270US MiniDV and I am having trouble trying to get audio when capturing to my PC. I have no trouble with video. Here is what I have tried so far on 2 different PC's (to rule out my PC itself) Using the RCA? cord and the Pinnicle Linx connector/software, video, but no sound. I have also tried win. movie maker and Nero with the Rca's, same thing, video but no sound. I tried as many settings as possible in their software but no luck. the Camcorder also came with an AV out to USP cable which does absolutly nothing in any software. My comp doesnt even make the dingDING sound that it does when I hook anything to the usb port. When I had a VHSc camcorder, the Pinnicle linx worked fine with its own software, but I had video with no sound in movimaker(if that helps any). any help would be greatly appreciated

The way you should be transferring DV digital video is with the IEEE-1394 cable like these

    http://www.cwol.com/firewire/1394_cables.htm

If you don't have a port add an adapter like these

    http://www.ramelectronics.net/html/ieee-1394_host_adapter_card.html
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.asp?Submit=Go&DEPA=0&type=&description=IEEE-...&Go.x=0&Go.y=0

PC Cards are available for laptops.

Use something simple like WinDV to transfer the DV stream and to test your system. Video will be transferred as a digital stream in full quality and will include PCM digital audio.

WinDV is a good tool to verify DirectX is working correctly. Later you can also use Windows Movie Maker or NeroVision Express to do the transfer if you prefer.

DVI-I is for a computer monitor (contains DVI-D digital and VGA analog pins)

No, we can't tell why you get no sound as our crystal balls aren't currently working. How did you connect it? What did you connect it to? What settings did you select in your software? and any number of other questions.

While this may not apply, did you try to listen via a TV or just plain headphones? Your camera may not be outputting sound or there may be no sound on the tape.

Yes i forgot to mention- I Did plug it into the TV and the sound and video was fine (using the same cables as I am using on my computer) At first I though it was my computer, but I tried it on another, and just today, I tried it on a 3rd and no sound.

That still doesn't tell a lot. RCA cord? How many ways? 2 way? 3 way? Presumably three way, yellow, red and white, but you don't say. What plug did you connect to what sockets on the camcorder? What connectors are on the Linx connector? Which plugs did you connect to which socket(s)? In the software, is there a setting for audio source? Does the Linx connector deal with audio or does that need to go directly to the soundcard? Which record source setting is selected in your sound mixer?

Now do you see what I mean about insufficient information?

By the way, the USB connector on a camcorder is solely for transferring stills and low resolution webcam type video.

  12. Ok, so you dont think itīs the PC...and you know that your camcorder (and itīs A/V cable)is allright, since you can see and hear its output out of your TV, well, as itīs been said already, it can be many things but your tests suggest that maybe your Linx cable has been damaged(the tiny wires inside for example)...why donīt you do the following: connect another video device with RCA A/V out to your PC and do a test cap, maybe from a VCR(whatīs that?), a DVD player, etc...just to see if your linx/Studio is working as it should.

  13. Ah..and I forgot...you should also seriously consider using a firewire(IEEE-1394) cable since you have the port...even if you fix the linx problem.

I just go the 1394 thing ant it is working fine now. Ok, you are right G- not enough info but i am a n00b (hence the newbie section posting) and we are dumb like that. I just assumed that when anybody has the RCA attachments for thier camcorders that it is a 3 way, red white yellow. this goes from my camcorder into female RCA jacks on the Pinnicle Linx Cord (also has red white and yellow), which the other end is a USB connector that plugs into the USB port on the front of my computer. I guess somehow the Linx connector routes the audio to my onboard sound I first thought that I had a bad USB port on this computer, because I just finished building it and am still expecting problems. I then tried the USB's on the back, and still no luck with the sound. First, I used the Pinnicle Studio software that came with the Linx cable which has video and audio capturing capibility and it worked on my old computer and my old VHSc camcorder. in Pinnicle Studio and Win movie maker, there is only one option for audio source and it is the Realtec sound on my Motherboard. there are also sub-menus on both software progs for "audio input" ex. line in, microphone, stereo, mono,etc.. and I tried every one and no luck. after failing with the Linx connector, I tried the AV connector that came with the Cam, it has a jack similar to a headphone jack on the camera end, and the other end is USB. this did absolutely nothing at all. Like I said though, I got the 1394 and its working fine now but im a little curious why nothing else worked. again sorry about the vaugeness- my original posting was done with my PPC and its a pain to type with. Thank you for all the help!
